Patrick Barkey, one of Indiana’s most prominent economists, has accepted a post at the University of Montana and will be leaving Ball State University in March.

Barkey, director of economic policy studies at Ball State’s Bureau of Business Research, has been with the university since 1993. He will become a senior researcher at the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Missouri in Missoula.

“It’s a little bit of a lifestyle change,” said Barkey, 52. “The kids are gone, you re-evaluate what you want to do. It’s a very well-run research center in a state that’s growing very rapidly.”

Barkey writes a weekly column on the Indiana economy that appears in IBJ and about a dozen other state newspapers.

His wife, Rita, a freelance writer and contract English professor at Ball State, plans to teach at the University of Montana.
