United Water said today it has acquired AOS Operating System for $6.7 million, sweeping in 82 contracts and 180 workers mostly in Eastern and Western states.

United Water’s North American headquarters is in Indianapolis at 151 N. Delaware St. It oversees wastewater services at Indianapolis’ two wastewater treatment plants and wastewater plants in Cumberland and Gary. United Water also has contracts for 88 regulated utilities and municipal wastewater systems outside the state.

The company is owned by France-based Suez Group.

AOS is owned by Kelda Group of Bradford, England, one of the world’s largest water and wastewater companies.

United Water spokesman Eugene Anderson said the deal likely means adding three to five positions to the 24 now at its local headquarters. United Water has another 225 staff operating the Indianapolis plants. The balance of the 180 AOS workers will remain in the field.

The announcement is the second in Indianapolis this month from a major private utility operator.

Veolia Water said June 21 it would move its headquarters to Indianapolis from Houston, creating 100 jobs. Veolia, which operates Indianapolis’ fresh water system, is owned by Veolia Environmental, also based in France.
