EPA won’t stop BP expansion, dumping, chief says

The administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection agency said yesterday that the agency won’t stop BP’s plans to expand and discharge more ammonia and suspended solids into Lake Michigan.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Stephen Johnson said, “In this case, it’s my understanding that Indiana issued a permit that it fully compliant with the Clean Water Act. As an agency, we need to honor the permit.”

The British oil giant’s plans to spend $3 billion to expand its refinery in Whiting in northwest Indiana has drawn howls of protests from Illinois politicians and a 387-26 vote in the U.S. House last week urging Indiana to withdraw its support.

A Chicago Sun-Times editorial today accused BP of hypocrisy for advocating environmentalism in an advertising campaign while intending to release pollution that would harm aquatic life.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has said he supports the plan because it complies with state and federal rules.
