Chakaia Booker public art contract signed

It’s official-Chakaia Booker will be the next big public arts display in Indianapolis.

The Arts Council of Indianapolis said this afternoon that the New York-based artist will be paid $140,000 to produce nine over-sized works for the show. Booker’s trademark is large sculptures built on metal frames covered with cut, shaped and molded tires. The locations are still being chosen for the exhibit, which will debut in May.

“We’re thrilled to build on the successes of our previous shows and on the visual literacy of our community,” said Mindy Taylor Ross, director of public art for the council.

The exhibit’s entire budget is $250,000 and the works will be up for just shy of one year.
