A group that protested the proposed Illiana Expressway in northwest Indiana has taken sides with landowners who oppose a sprawling intermodal facility planned for LaPorte County.

Citizens Against the Privatized Illiana Tollroad is helping Stop Intermodal Save Our County-also to prevent development of farmland, according to the Times of Munster.

State and local negotiators are trying to lure the 3,000-acre operation to Union Mills. Intermodals shift cargo between railroads and trucks, and are considered economic development plums for the hundreds and sometimes thousands of jobs they create.

In addition to traditional corn and soybeans, blueberries and vegetables are raised on the proposed intermodal site.

During this year’s General Assembly, a storm of protest turned back plans by Gov. Mitch Daniels to launch the long-discussed Illiana. The project would link Interstate 65 in Lake County with Interstate 57 in Illinois to take pressure off the congested Borman Expressway.

Rather than stop the highway cold, the General Assembly provided money for study.
