The Finish Line Inc. reported this afternoon that it lost $1.8 million in the second quarter ended Sept. 1.

While a reversal from the $9.2 million it earned a year earlier, the loss was smaller than the $3.9 million setback in its first fiscal quarter.

The most recent quarter included $13 million in costs to close its 15 Paiva stores.

Sales increased 1.3 percent, to $343 million. Comparable-store sales dipped 4.7 percent-an improvement from a 6.6-percent decline in the first quarter.

The Indianapolis-based shoe and athletic clothing retailer made no mention of its tangle with Genesco, the Nashville, Tenn., company it offered to buy for $1.5 billion.

Earlier this month, Genesco, which operates mall retailers including Journeys and Hat World, sued Finish Line to try to force it to close the acquisition. Finish Line retorted by charging that Genesco is withholding financial information.
