But the auto parts maker that absorbed it in 2000 plans to shutter Arvin’s last presence there by the end of this year.
Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong was notified by e-mail this week that Michigan-based ArvinMeritor Inc. soon will cease operations at its Corporate Information Technology Center, according to The Republic of Columbus. The facility had 63 employees as recently as March.
The building at Columbus Municipal Airport opened in October 2002. All its business will be transferred to other locations by Dec. 31. The facility and ArvinMeritor’s airport hangar both are for sale.
In the last four years, ArvinMeritor has sold three other Columbus plants, the newspaper reported.
ArvinMeritor was formed in 2000 by the merger of Arvin Inc. and Meritor Automotive Inc.
Armstrong said Columbus’ loss of ArvinMeritor is at least partially offset by the city’s efforts to attract other firms, which should add 900 new jobs over the next few years.
