The mayor who was in office when Honda Motor Co. announced in summer 2006 that it would build an assembly plant in Greensburg was shoved out of office yesterday by a wide margin.

Frank Manus lost to city council member Gary Herbert 1,679-1,000, according to the Greensburg Daily News.

Herbert told the newspaper that Manus wasn’t pivotal in attracting the plant but credited him with “a good job of reacting to its presence.”

The $550 million facility will employ more than 2,000 when it comes online next fall and was one of the biggest economic development coups achieved by the state in recent years.

However, Herbert complained that his opinions were not heard on the council and pledged to be more inclusive in making decisions.

There’s little love lost between the two, thus the potential for a rocky transition.

Herbert said he would try to learn from Manus’ mistakes.

For his part, Manus said, “I’ll let him run his own ship. He already knows everything. I don’t think he’ll ask for my help and I don’t feel any obligation to help.”
