A call center operator has chosen Anderson for a new operation and plans to hire as many as 400 workers within a year, Mayor Kris Ockomon said this morning.

Agape LLC, a startup, picked Anderson for its available work force and access to fiber optics.

Agape will set up shop in the Union Building, which was built downtown in 1902 and is undergoing renovation to create 30,000 square feet of office space.

About 75 workers will be hired immediately. Positions will pay an average of $10 an hour.

Ockomon did not provide additional details about the company, but Anderson’s Herald Bulletin newspaper said Agape is a telecommunications subcontractor starting out with two contracts: one handling vacation sales and one selling subscriptions for trade publications.
