Eli Lilly and Co. this morning held a dedication ceremony for the last phase of its $1 billion biotechnology complex southwest of downtown Indianapolis.
The latest addition is a 475,000-square-foot laboratory building. It will house nearly 500 Lilly scientists and support staff who are moving from an older building used to make propellers during World War II.
Lilly staff will use the 33 labs in the building to take potentially useful genes discovered by Lilly scientists and get them ready to produce medicines for clinical trials.
Next door to the new labs is a $330 million production facility. Opened in October 2006, it makes biotech medicines for use in clinical trials.
