WellPoint Inc.’s top information technology officer will retire from the company July 1, prompting the health insurer to reorganize the business unit he led.

Mark Boxer, WellPoint’s CEO of operations, technology and government services, is leaving for the University of Connecticut, where he will teach business courses and conduct health care policy research, according to a WellPoint statement. Boxer earned his MBA from the university.

WellPoint does not plan to replace Boxer. Instead, it will hire a chief information officer and place other parts of Boxer’s unit under other executives.

Lori Beer will serve as acting chief information officer while WellPoint conducts a search. Beer is currently WellPoint’s senior vice president of enterprise solutions.

WellPoint’s service operations now will report to Kenneth Goulet, CEO of WellPoint’s commercial business unit. Also, federal government solutions will report to Randall Lewis, WellPoint’s executive vice president of audit and compliance.

Boxer, 48, joined WellPoint’s predecessor, Anthem Inc., in 2000.

In addition to his work at WellPoint, Boxer is a director at Indianapolis-based FinishMaster Inc., serves on the board of overseers for the University of Connecticut School of Business, and is a senior adviser at the Center for Health Systems Research.
