  1. This is a classic example of putting the cart before the horse. This is going to be a huge problem. California doesn’t have enough power to get by without electric vehicles now. When you’re stranded, you can’t just get a gallon of electricity to get you to a charging station.

    1. We built the federal highway system in like 15 years…. I think if we can resolve this issue at the federal level if we stop shooting ourselves in the foot

    2. This won’t be a huge problem as more chargers are added to the system every day. Apartment companies could easily add these and for little to no cost from the property owner, depending on which provider they go with. Tesla just put out a roadmap of a few thousand with even Lebanon, Indiana being on the list. They’re going more suburban now. It’s not been a problem for me, but folks have these one-off stories that are scary to people, I believe in an attempt to get people away from EVs. This person likely would be the same person to run their tank down to E and then run out of gas on the freeway. Roadside assistance through my insurance has a boost charger for EVs, it’d take 10 minutes to get 25 miles of range, plenty to get to a charger. My insurance is 20% cheaper than a comparable brand-new gas car.

      This is a not a problem here though (like at all). There’s chargers everywhere in Indy and with Google Maps and Waze will map you to the nearest charger either AC or DC. Then my car’s built in maps app will tell me when my car is below 15% and will automatically map me to the nearest charger.

      Meijer and the Walmart in Beech Grove, for instance, have a plethora of chargers, 14 chargers last I counted at Walmart and they have 75-350 kw /hour charging options. There might be one or two people there while I am, but it’s fast and then it’s ready for the next person.

      It take my EV 15 minutes to get 80% battery and 25 minutes for a full charge. So, I just go to Walmart, waste 20 minutes in there looking around and getting my necessities instead of ordering them online. ElectrifyAmerica is really big here as well as ChargePoint. All of our Simon Malls have at least 2-4 chargers per garage. Simon charges $0.43/kw and mine uses about 30 kw at most, since we’re recommended to run it from 80% to 20% for maximum battery life / efficiency. Battery is guaranteed well past the time I’ll have the car at 150k miles, so again not to worried of that either. It has a watertight, sealed battery array under the entire car, unlike Tesla’s, so not worried of that either. It goes fast, has great autonomous handling features and fits my life. I drive 12 miles each way to work but spend about 30-35 minutes in the car so the awesome 14-speaker radio and that it barely uses power when I’m stopped or in bumper-to-bumper traffic really makes a difference. Fun to let off the accelerator when coasting down hills and watch the regeneration happen.
      They all work in different ways like Volta is a large LED display that shows ads as you charge, but then the company uses their ad dollars to pay the expenses/costs. Then companies like ElectrifyAmerica will do regular promos for free charging and my car came with 1,000 free charging hours. So to me, it’s just poor planning that’d cause one to totally run out of power, as they’re all open 24 hours, unless it’s in a garage that closes. But again around here in Indy, that’s not a problem.

    1. Yes generally. They’re all ran by different companies. We have EvGO, CharePoint, Volta, ElectrifyAmerica and a few others in our area alone. There will be more and more chargers setup as more industries, retailers, hotels, schools and other places you spend a lot of time catch on and catch up like theme parks. They range in price from free promotions (the company pays for) or free by watching an ad (the company uses ad dollars to pay for the charge and the machine) or it costs around $0.25 to $0.50 a kilowatt, plus parking fee if you’re in a garage that also charges for parking. I use the Walmart ElectrifyAmerica chargers in Beech Grove.

Joke aside we have a lot of unformed/uneducated car buyers as evidenced by this article and above comments. EV are not that complex (one of the biggest attributes). Do some dang research before jumping to conclusions. Also, PHEV is the best of both worlds, prove me wrong.

    1. As someone who has shopped for a PHEV and ended up buying an electric vehicle, you’re wrong Jaron. You were right when electric vehicles only had an 85 mile limit. But now, the bottom end range on newer EVs is 150 miles and many are higher than that.. PHEVs only have a range of about 35 miles before the gas engine has to kick in. 35 miles is nothing.
