This unfortunate scenario underscores the need for a national policy for healthcare coverage. We do not need partisan bickering and scare tactic hyperbole regarding other countries’ national healthcare system. The objective and challenge for states and or Congress should be quality basic healthcare for all citizens. This would support the ideal of entrepreneurship by enabling many to open a business without fear for one’s or one’s family. Certainly include private health providers as similar the Medicare Advantage and for extra services to be paid by individuals or as a perk with companies. Contrary to popular belief, Medicare is not free and a sliding scale based on income exists. Again. all citizens should have basic health care, And, yes, the US and its generous bench of wealthy companies can indeed afford it. National healthcare programs in Canada, France, Germany, and the UK still are a great deal and definitely much better than NOTHING in the US. Horror stories from other countries can be readily matched by some from the US; do not buy the propaganda the the US is best – I can be great for some but lacking for lacking for many more.
As someone who was forced into getting health insurance coverage for my family, it truly sucks. The cost is enormous (more than my mortgage, water, electricity, sewer, and dsl bills combined). I won’t see dollar 1 of advantage/payback until over 15K of costs are incurred, and there’s no guarantee that the billing will be done in a comprehendible/consistent way. The bloat and mismanagement of the health insurers are probably amplified by the bloat and mismanagement of the “healthcare providers.” Both sides are incentivized to provide the minimum service and confounding customer services to the recipient/customer. Not to mention, there’s zero control by the recipient on what is covered or not…just take the pill /shot/MRI and hope to get well without actually thinking about the costs.
The overall structure of healthcare should be moved. We don’t rely on our employers to cover our auto insurance — yet it’s mandatory. We don’t rely on our employers to cover homeowner/rental insurance — yet it’s considered extremely important. Why is it that we’re forced to having only the employer carry the health insurance?
Also — Let’s stop calling it what it isn’t. You’re punished for being healthy by paying more for those who aren’t. It is a total misnomer to say you’re having your health insured –when it’s mostly about making certain you’ll return to a service provider for yet more pills/shots/surgeries…It’s more Illness-maintenance than health insurance. If someone decides to live an unhealthy lifestyle, then let them pay the super premium — or at the very least, discount those of us who make every attempt at staying away from the service providers by doing what they recommend in the first place (eat real food, not to much, mostly plants — Exercise more and eat less — don’t do stupid things like playing golf on the highway)
This is just another sign of things being so broken and in dire need of resetting.
We need a more rational insurance system that does not punish those who don’t depend on their employers for health insurance. I became a self-employed consultant 10 years ago after 20+ years working for a large company. My first year, 2011, health insurance premiums for a family of five were about $7000. It was more than what I was used to paying for my employer provided policy, but not bad. It didn’t have all the perks of my former employer’s plan, but it was insurance against a debilitating cost. Prior to ACA, my premium peaked at about $9000. Since ACA went into effect, the premiums zoomed upward and this year I’ll pay $27,000 for a family of five. I’m anticipating in 2021 it will be $30,000. I essentially have one choice of insurance provider and I am buying the cheapest plan I can. I can’t get into group insurance programs because I am self-employed and have no employees. Most of the insurers have stopped writing policies in Indiana for self-employed. My deductible is nearly $7,000 per person and $14,000 for the family. I get no subsidies from the government. We’ve only had one year in the past 10 where one person hit their deductible and in most cases we’re all at less than 20% of our deductible. ACA has been nothing short of an abusive tax on my family simply because I am self-employed and I’ve earned more than the threshold for getting a subsidy. I have no issue in me paying taxes which correspond to my income level, but essentially ACA has disproportionately increased my “taxes” – probably by 2X.
