Will Indy get an IKEA?

That’s a popular question around here. Has been for years. The city is not currently in discussions with the Swedish home furnishings giant, said Jim Garrard, Indy’s economic development director. But it was a different story a few years ago. The retailer considered both Lafayette Square and Eastgate in its search for a new Midwest store location, Garrard said. The city even set up a special Web site as part of its bid to lure IKEA. Instead of choosing Indianapolis, IKEA headed to Ohio, where it broke ground a few months ago in a suburb north of Cincinnati. The chain also has a store in Michigan and two in the Chicago area. “It’s one of those entities that’s a feather in the cap if you have one,” Garrard said. One of these days.
