Loss of institute may polarize Statehouse debate: Board considers shuttering respected government research organization

October 8, 2007

If the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute remains shuttered due to a lack of funds, the public won’t notice immediately. After all, the Indianapolis-based organization focused on long-term analysis of complicated communal questions, such as how to equalize property taxes, diversify state pensions or finance public schools. But taxpayers eventually will feel the impact. For 20 years, the institute has played a key role in Statehouse debate, helping frame major issues with hard facts and figures that conservatives and liberals alike…

Economy to be jittery, Fifth Third strategist says

October 12, 2007

The U.S. economy probably has avoided the likelihood it will slip into recession, a Fifth Third Bank strategist said today. But in 2008, investors face an uncertain environment where the fastest action will be found overseas. “In general, the fears of recession have now diminished,” Chief Investment Strategist John Augustine said this morning. “[But] it’s […]

consultant shows a radical, $600 million reconfiguration is in the works.

SPORTS: These are the most valuable players on our team

October 15, 2007

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning made news recently when Business Week ranked him 13th among the 100 most-powerful people in sports. Not to be outdone, or to let a good idea go unstolen, here’s my list of the 25 most- influential people in Indianapolis sports. Criteria: my opinion. No. 1: Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George. With three races (including next September’s Moto GP motorcycle debut) bringing in more than $700 million annually, IMS is the elephant in the room that…

Governor playing deal-maker with property-tax plan

October 29, 2007

The art of the deal is to get more than you give up. If Gov. Mitch Daniels convinces the General Assembly to pass his property
tax plan intact, he’ll meet the definition of deal-maker, and then some.

Clinton’s 401(k) proposal receiving mixed reviews: Experts disagree on whether plan can spur savings

October 29, 2007

Republican presidential candidate Herbert Hoover promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, leading everyone to believe they would be prosperous under his administration. Fast-forward 80 years and a candidate from the other side of the aisle, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is offering an incentive more fitting for the new millennium: a match on workers’ 401(k) contributions. Time will tell whether Clinton becomes president and ultimately fulfills the pledge, but what prompted it is Americans’ reluctance…

Ballard, under-funded and under-supported by his own party, pulled off his epic upset for…
