Lafayette Square slated for $12M redevelopment

March 14, 2008

The new owners of Lafayette Square Mall are plotting a $12 million redevelopment that would add a go-kart track and PC gaming area to anchor space formerly occupied by Lazarus. New York-based Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. wants to make maximum use of the 113-acre property, which it bought from locally based Simon Property Group in December. […]

Mall getting go-karts and golf

March 14, 2008

The new owners of Lafayette Square Mall are plotting a $12-million redevelopment that would add a go-kart track and PC gaming area to the former Lazarus. New York-based…

VIEWPOINT: Could design transform your company?

February 25, 2008

At first glance, it seems like an odd scenario: a group of Indianapolis architects attending an auto show in Detroit so they can hear an Ohio guy talk about golf clubs. As convoluted as that seems, though, the trip makes perfect sense when you understand its purpose. We went to hear people talk about design and how it can define a product, brand or company. The event we attended was the AutoWeek Design Forum, presented as a part of the…

Housing slump puts Gramercy project in Carmel on hold:

February 25, 2008

The deteriorating housing market and Carmel’s plans to build more roundabouts have led The Buckingham Cos. to put the brakes on its ambitious Gramercy development project. The $500 million project set to begin in the spring now has no timetable. But when construction ultimately commences, it likely will begin with the commercial and retail portions rather than the home-building portion, as was originally planned, said Clyde Lee, a spokesman for the local developer. “They have revised the plans,” Lee said….

Hancock developer’s plan matures: Copper Leaf would be region’s largest, most comprehensive senior housing

November 19, 2007

What started as Jim Brothers’ search for an assisted-living facility for his mother could end up as the region’s most comprehensive retirement “resort.” The president of The Bradford Group, an Indianapolis residential developer, has been working several months to get the zoning he needs for Copper Leaf. The 177-acre community on the east side of McCordsville would be home to 400 to 600 residents and sport a nine-hole public golf course. About 30 acres would be set aside for restaurants,…

Glut of local golf courses puts squeeze on owners: Demand has never quite met expectations

November 12, 2007

Tiger Woods, the world’s No. 1 golfer, has been great for the sport. But he has not helped attract enough players to the game here and across the country to keep pace with the numbers who are stepping away because of age. That means many local golf course owners are closing the books on another tough season. Some area owners have seen the number of rounds played decline 40 percent since 2000. Golf course values here, meanwhile, have slid about…

Big housing project delayed until next year

November 1, 2007

A 2,000-home housing development planned for near Bargersville south of Indianapolis has been delayed until next year, according to the Daily Journal of Franklin. Developer Mike Duke said five other projects he is working on must be finished before starting the Abbey, which is to have single-family houses, townhouses, condominiums and a golf course. If […]

Furs, golf, fitness and Whac-A-Mole

October 31, 2007

A couple of nuggets from recent development plans:

Making Way for Venu: Another Woodfield Centre tenant is moving to make way for redevelopment. Elan Furs has filed plans to take space in Clearwater Shoppes…

Ambitious Brownsburg project withdrawn

September 20, 2007

A Virginia company says it has temporarily withdrawn its ambitious plans to build a hospital and hotel complex east of Brownsburg. Joe Cross, the construction manager for Metropolitan Medical Care Inc., confirmed today that the company has temporarily withdrawn its request for zoning approval from the Hendricks County Planning Commission, but that it intends the […]

Tiptoe through the toxins becomes walk in the park: $600,000 in federal, state grants fund initiative to turn former industrial sites into recreation areas

June 4, 2007

Take a deep breath of that air, wafting with the fragrance of methylnaphthalene. And those violets-must be the lead and arsenic in the soil that give them such a lovely glow. Nothing quite refreshes like a stroll through a hazardous waste site. Or, in the eyes of state planners, make that a former hazardous waste site. The Indiana Brownfields Program will create the Indiana Brownfields Trails & Park Initiative. It will assess abandoned industrial and commercial properties with real or…

Competition drives hospital chief: Lennen labors to grow hospital, county to stay ahead of Indianapolis peers

April 16, 2007

Competitive. That’s how Shelbyville community leaders describe Tony Lennen. Indeed. Any CEO of the city’s Major Hospital needs to be. Shelby County residents can, in just 20 to 45 minutes, drive up Interstate 74 or Interstate 65 to any of Indianapolis’ large hospitals, many of which boast massive marketing budgets and stables of specialists. But in nearly 14 years at the helm of Major Hospital, Lennen has found creative ways to boost profits, enhance technology, woo specialists and even-through aggressive…

Mixed-use project would transform Lawrence: Final piece of Fort Ben development includes residential, retail, offices

March 5, 2007

The final piece of a decade-long redevelopment of Fort Benjamin Harrison would give Lawrence a new downtown with shops, offices and public plazas mixed among as many as 1,000 condos, townhouses and apartments. The Fort Harrison Reuse Authority hasn’t settled on a name yet for the 88-acre project, but the quasi-governmental group’s board is expected to approve zoning updates this month that pave the way for the project. Public meetings will be held in March and April, and the first…

Off to slow start, French Lick fears threat from ‘racinos’

February 26, 2007

French Lick Resorts & Casino is already struggling, less than four months after its launch. And the casino’s owners are downright
terrified legislators soon will allow both of the state’s horse-racing tracks to become “racinos” and add up to 5,000 slot
machines.

Exclusive golf club opens up–a little

February 12, 2007

Until now, gaining entrance into the exclusive nine-hole golf course built on 40 acres next to the Indianapolis Metropolitan
Airport in Fishers was as difficult as a commoner scoring an invitation to a royal palace. But admittance to Balmoral is loosening–a
little.

Storms crisis for some, boon for others:

January 1, 2007

When two separate storms boasting 80-mile-per-hour winds and massive hail hit the Indianapolis area in April, it was just the beginning of headaches for some. For others, it was the beginning of a lot of green. A storm on April 2 produced straightline winds that knocked out windows and tore away portions of the façade at downtown’s One Indiana Square office tower. The city was forced to close Pennsylvania Street for days to keep cars and pedestrians away from the…

Critics question trustee’s property portfolio given mission to help needy

November 20, 2006

Center Township has real estate holdings worth more than $10 million, according to IBJ research. The township’s robust real estate portfolio—highly unusual for an Indiana township—fits Trustee Carl L. Drummer's vision for his taxpayer-supported office. But it makes others see red.

EYE ON THE PIE: How much do property rights matter?

November 13, 2006

Rep. Roberta Righteous won reelection to the Indiana House again this year without opposition. We met for coffee and cinnamon rolls at a quiet spot near the Statehouse. “What’s going to be this year’s hot topic in the Legislature?” I asked. “Not prayer,” she said. “Not abortion, not education, not even jobs. The issue will be protecting property rights.” “Are property rights being threatened?” I asked, licking the frosting from my fingers. “No more than usual,” she responded with a…

Lauth plans huge business park

August 28, 2006

Lauth Property Group is working to complete the purchase of 550 acres it has under contract at the northeast corner of Interstate 70 and State Road 39, one interchange west of Plainfield. Lauth plans to build 7.5-million-square-foot industrial park, dubbed Westpoint Business Park.

CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary: Carmel’s newest development craze?

August 21, 2006

What do you do if you own 40 acres smack dab in the middle of one of the hottest sections of Carmel; you are literally surrounded by cookiecutter subdivisions; and developers are swarming you with offers to buy your land at $100,000 an acre? If you’re Don and Judy Carter-Evans, you say “no thank you” and work with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to have threequarters of the acreage designated a Classified Wildlife Habitat. The Carter-Evans property is on…

New Sports Corp. boss adjusting game plan

August 14, 2006

Tom King thinks its time to run the not-for-profit Indiana Sports Corp. with a for-profit mind-set, a change that could radically alter the organization credited with implementing the city’s amateur sports strategy.
