NEWSMAKER: Dealmaker Hilbert starts private equity firm:

December 26, 2005

NEWSMAKER Dealmaker Hilbert starts private equity firm Five years after his ouster as CEO of Conseco Inc., the acquisitive insurer he founded, Steve Hilbert is back in the deal-making game. IBJ reported in November that Hilbert has launched MH Private Equity Fund LLC, a private-equity firm that plans to buy firms in specific industries and consolidate them. Consolidation will bring economies of scale and cost savings, the thinking goes, and also will create marketleading companies positioned to thrive in their…

Hotel proposed for Hamilton County’s Strawtown: Site overlaps sensitive American Indian land

December 19, 2005

Hamilton County park officials hope to find a developer to build a three-star hotel in 750-acre Strawtown Koteewi Park, an area rich with fragile American Indian artifacts. Businesses near the northeastern Hamilton County park love the idea. American Indian groups are less enthusiastic, but willing to work with park officials. “It’s kind of disturbing,” said Chief Brian Buchanan of the Miami Nation of Indians of the State of Indiana. “You wouldn’t want anybody digging up your grandmother.” Buchanan learned of…

De-stressing the holidays: Redefining ‘perfection,’ embracing simplicity are important keys

December 12, 2005

The holidays evoke picture-perfect images of beautifully decorated homes, homemade gifts and elegant, effortless entertaining. Everyone gets along fabulously and you get to relax around the fireplace and enjoy it all. The reality for many women, however, is that the frantic rushing around to get things done takes all the magic out of the season. Thankfully, there are simple things everyone can do to make the holidays less stressful. Don’t be a slave to tradition Re-evaluating traditions and setting realistic…

Disappearing Ink: People go to great lengths, spend big money to erase their youthful body-art decisions

December 12, 2005

People go to great lengths, spend big money to erase their youthful body-art decisions When Allen George groggily awoke one morning 30 years ago after a night of drinking with two Army buddies, he couldn’t figure out why his arm was stuck to the bedsheet. A closer look revealed a large blood spot had soaked through and dried overnight. He carefully tore away the sheet and looked at his forearm. Staring back at him was a large, brightly colored peacock sitting…

NOTIONS: Lamenting the uncivil right to push me and mine

December 12, 2005

Several weeks ago, the Carmel City Council voted 4-3 to ban workplace smoking. Before casting their ayes and nays, some councilors explained why they would vote a particular way. One councilor said he had smoked for years and finally quit. He said it was a wise decision. He urged other smokers to quit, too. Then he issued another plea to smokers: He said that even if they wouldn’t quit, they should voluntarily stop smoking in places where their secondhand smoke…

Pass the sushi, boss; it’s time to celebrate: Corporate holiday events are less common, more fun

December 5, 2005

Surveys may point to a decrease in corporate parties this holiday season, but party planners say those who attend them are likely to have more fun. The trend is shifting away from stuffy, business-focused affairs. More parties are including live music and other entertainment, said Joe Husar, co-owner of Kahn’s Katering and meeting venue Montage at Allison Pointe. Still, this year could mark the first decrease in corporate holiday events since 2001, according to a national survey. Eighty-seven percent of…

BEHIND THE NEWS: After bout of indigestion, Galyan’s buyer on the rebound

November 28, 2005

Just in time for Christmas, Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. finally has its arms around its biggest acquisition ever, last year’s $305 million purchase of Galyan’s Trading Co., the 48-store chain that was based in Plainfield. Pittsburgh-based Dick’s rattled investors in August, reporting Galyan’s stores had posted disappointing sales after adopting the Dick’s moniker and store merchandise. In a single day of trading, Dick’s shares plunged $6.33, or 16 percent, to close at $32.90. In the ensuing weeks, investors continued to…

WestClay moves retail to the fringe: Brenwick modifies commercial part of plan

November 28, 2005

As land is cleared for the final major sections of Carmel’s Village of WestClay, the developer of the Indianapolis area’s most-heralded example of new urbanism is discovering an age-old truth: Plans change. WestClay Uptown and the West Village, as they will be called, represent major changes to Brenwick Development’s plan and reflect changing demand from inside and outside the borders of the 686-acre development. Staying are WestClay’s guiding concepts-a mammoth subdivision designed in the style of a 19th century village…

Food assembly hot: Franchises hope to capitalize on make-it, take-it meal trend

November 28, 2005

Put the pots and pans in the trash. Cooking at home belongs with the mastodons. At least that’s the premise of local franchisees rushing to get a stake in central Indiana’s burgeoning food-assembly business. Naysayers, however, worry the industry is growing too fast. The concept is simple: Nobody has time in today’s BlackBerry-toting society to go to the grocery store, let alone cook a decent meal. That’s where franchises like Dinner by Design, Dream Dinners and Super Suppers come in….

Fine-tuning a business strategy: Local violinmaker finds success by raising prices

November 28, 2005

F ine-tuning a business strategy Local violinmaker finds success by raising prices John Welch made a counterintuitive business decision two years ago. The violin business was in decline. Asian manufacturers were turning out high-quality stringed instruments for a fraction of the price of their American competitors. Welch decided to swim against the current. He raised prices. “We realized the only way to compete with the Chinese was to improve our quality,” said Welch, CEO of Indianapolis-based Sofia Violins. “We realized…

Merry Realty Inc.: Big plans for small firm Real estate agency tries to win business by teaching buyers rules of the game

November 21, 2005

Real estate agency tries to win business by teaching buyers rules of the game Large agencies may dominate the residential real estate game, but Indianapolis-based Merry Realty is trying to prove a small player still can make a big name for itself. For years, Merry Realty has focused its efforts on properties in Indianapolis, but it is rapidly expanding into a more diverse market, targeting booming areas like Hamilton County while staying loyal to its inner-city roots. Real estate broker…

ITT Educational Services rebounds from federal probe: With stock at 52-week high, company plans growth

November 21, 2005

After rebounding from a federal criminal probe that uncovered no wrongdoing, ITT Educational Services Inc. is proceeding with an ambitious growth plan in hopes of building upon a bullish earnings run. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Houston, which led the investigation into whether the Carmel-based private provider of postsecondary degree programs had falsified student records, acknowledged in June that it did not turn up evidence justifying the charges. “It was very, very disruptive and very distracting to the organization,” ITT…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Hilbert’s next act: Jumping into private equity game

November 14, 2005

Stephen Hilbert suffered another legal defeat last week. But don’t bet the founder and ex-CEO of Conseco Inc. is sitting around feeling sorry for himself. In fact, this fall Hilbert, 59, is quietly launching a major new business, one that will get him back into the acquisition game, a field he savored during his two decades atop Conseco. Details are sketchy, because Hilbert isn’t talking. But here’s what a little snooping turned up: Attorneys in July filed papers with the…

GERALD BEPKO Commentary: Another reason I’m proud to be a Hoosier

November 14, 2005

Ashley Crouse was an attractive, talented, 21-year-old junior at Indiana University’s flagship campus in Bloomington who was filled with passion for good causes. On April 12, in one of those events that shake our beliefs to the core, she lost her life in an auto accident. At the time of her death, Ashley was a leader of IU students in efforts to raise funds for the Riley Hospital for Children through a dance marathon. These efforts began in 1991 when…

Auto firms steer clear of a trial: Automotive Finance Corp., Dealer Services settle suits, sidelining 12 employees

November 14, 2005

Vehicle auction giant Adesa Inc. and a firm founded by ex-employees have halted a demolition derby in which each alleged the other tried to wreck its competing vehicle finance business. Prominent in the settlement reached last week in Hamilton Superior Court between Adesa’s Automotive Finance Corp. and newcomer Dealer Services Corp.-both based in Carmel-is a requirement that a dozen DSC employees take paid leaves of absence ranging from two to six months. A u t o m o t ive…

Crown Hill’s land in play: Cemetery negotiating 66-acre property sale with local developer

November 14, 2005

Carmel-based Brenwick Development Co., known for luxury residential developments in Hamilton County, has struck a deal to buy 66 acres of land at the north end of Crown Hill Cemetery. Brenwick has signed a letter of intent to purchase the wooded land, cemetery President Keith Norwalk confirmed. Negotiations between Brenwick and Crown Hill are in the early stages, Norwalk stressed. He said there won’t be a closing of the transaction anytime soon. “There will be significant negotiation before it’s a…

Ovation still standing: Electronics retailer faces tough decisions after Chapter 11

November 14, 2005

Best Buy now sells television sets that cost almost $10,000. Circuit City shoppers can pull a $400 DVD player off the shelves. Wal-Mart hawks “home-theaters-in-a-box.” Add it all up and it equates to a static-filled picture for Ovation Audio Video Specialists, the retailer of pricey electronic gizmos that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month. “We’re starting to see a diluting effect” as box retailers sell more highend merchandise, said Andy Willcox, president of the Custom Electronic Design &…

Kite flies third plan for Nora project: Developer scales back condos, dangles Whole Foods Market

November 7, 2005

Developer Paul Kite is back for a third round in his battle with Nora residents to develop a condominium/retail project on the last undeveloped corner of 86th Street and Keystone Avenue. In plans submitted to the city and to neighborhood groups, Kite’s PK Capital LLC has drastically trimmed the number of condo units planned for the 13 acres, but reintroduced the concept of a specialty grocery on the site. PK is working to bring the state’s first Whole Foods Market…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Feds say exec pilfered passport, but judge isn’t convinced

November 7, 2005

Here’s a new twist in the already surreal saga of James T. O’Neal Jr., the Carmel native preparing to stand trial in Orlando on charges he swindled millions of dollars from executives here and in Florida. In late September, a new court filing charges, the 59-year-old Orlando resident swiped his passport and the Social Security cards for himself and his family from a repository of court records in Indianapolis. “It is a reasonable assumption that he will continue to take…

Groceries go global: Ethnic food stores surge in popularity, number

November 7, 2005

Salsa outsells ketchup. Tortillas fly off the shelves almost as fast as white bread. And if you’re looking for these new staples of the American diet, Indianapolis is increasingly a good place to find them. Sixteen years ago, there were three Latino grocery stores in Indianapolis, according to Manuel Gonzalez, president of the Indiana State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Today, there are more than 40. And that’s just the places that specialize in products like milpero tomatoes and serrano chilies….
