University Loft finds growing niche in hospitality industry: Indianapolis-based furniture manufacturer known for college products sees big potential in hotel segment

February 12, 2007

The University Loft Co.’s graduation from dormitory to hotel-furniture maker is beginning to show promise. While the Indianapolis-based manufacturer’s bread and butter remains campus furnishings, its decision to enter the hospitality market in 2003 has CEO James Jannetides thinking big-as in presidentialsuite big. In four years, the ULC Hospitality division has grown to account for nearly 10 percent of the company’s $100 million annual revenue. Jannetides, though, envisions the branch’s eventually contributing half in his quest to someday make ULC…

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: This finally may be the year for property tax reform

February 12, 2007

Brace yourself for lots of action in the next two weeks, as the deadlines approach for bills originating in the House to be passed to the Senate, and vice versa. While this is a long session of the General Assembly and one might assume this would lead to more deliberative contemplation, the extra days do not seem to make much difference as deadlines approach. Some of the larger issues that require more massaging and compromise tend not to be drafted…

VIEWPOINT: Don’t put your money into ‘The Big Lie’

February 19, 2007

If it sounds too good to be true-invest! This perversion of the old adage has cost many investors their life savings. How does it happen? In talking to many investors who’ve been victimized by outright scams, I’ve noticed the tendency of some to respond to what we call “The Big Lie.” Most investors seem to keep their guard up pretty high when approached about investing in a scheme that might return 10 percent, 15 percent or even 25 percent in…

UPDATE: City seeks $6M for Market Square site

February 19, 2007

The city is restarting efforts to find a company to redevelop the former site of Market Square Arena, which has languished as a parking lot since the city tore down the arena almost six years ago. A new request for proposals likely will go out Wednesday. This time around, developers will need to propose […]

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: So far, session is all about unearthing new revenue

February 26, 2007

Sure, it’s a budget session, and one would expect fiscal talk to dominate the discussion. But the one thing that has surprised us so far this year-and we are literally at the midpoint-is just how much the dollar debate has consumed this Legislature. Through the first few weeks of the session, the big sport was picking the over/under on when the relationship between Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) and House Speaker Pat Bauer (DSouth Bend)-and thus between Republicans and Democrats as…

NOTIONS Bruce Hetrick: A buck-a-pack increased tax for the health we lack

February 26, 2007

After our Valentine’s Day wedding, my bride and I took a few days off for a brief New York City honeymoon. We walked nearly everywhere, used public transportation when we wanted to go farther and bought our food and drink in jam-packed, smoke-free restaurants and bars (the only kind there are in New York, thanks to a several-years-old, levelthe-playing-field, smoke-free workplace law). I liked being able to dine anywhere and everywhere with clean indoor air. I liked the exercise from…

New NFIB boss knows politics: State chapter to devote more time to campaigns

February 26, 2007

Kevin Hughes cut his teeth in the political world. Now he’s taking a bite out of small business, as the new state director for the National Federation of Independent Business. Hughes, 30, has never owned his own business, but he worked for six years at the Ohio State Legislature as a legislative aide and for the Senate Republicans there. He also worked on several campaigns. In 2004, Hughes took a job as the Midwest regional political director for NFIB in…

Brightpoint’s buy turns the tables

February 26, 2007

On Feb. 20, Plainfield-based cell phone distributor Brightpoint Inc. announced a blockbuster deal to buy Dangaard, its largest
European rival, for $308 million, a reversal of fortunes from five years ago between the competitors.

Democrats grooming Schellinger as candidate for governor

March 5, 2007

In the Democrats’ field of potential candidates to unseat Gov. Mitch Daniels, there are few household names. That’s why they’re
preparing to spend the next 19 months introducing you to Jim Schellinger.

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Dems’ control of House has shifted legislative dynamics

March 5, 2007

The Indiana General Assembly has reached mid-session, the point at which bills originating in the House have passed to the Senate, and vice versa. Those bills that have not mustered enough votes to cross the rotunda are theoretically dead, but, as you’re accustomed to seeing in any number of cheap horror movies, there are all kinds of ways a concept can still arise from the dead until adjournment sine die. The time remaining in the session is so much more…

Broker wants Lucas Oil to move HQ near airport

March 5, 2007

Marvin Miller is representing a landowner trying to sell 125 acres just north of Indianapolis International Airport. But Miller
wants him to give away some of the property to persuade California-based Lucas Oil to move its headquarters there, jump-starting
the stagnant area in the process.

Indiana, other states want I-70 truck lanes

March 5, 2007

A proposed study that would look at adding special lanes for trucks on Interstate 70 has cleared its first hurdle at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and now is competing with 13 other projects for a final nod from the federal government. Indiana along with Illinois, Missouri and Ohio applied to the federal Corridor of […]

Another group formed to oppose Indianapolis bypass

March 8, 2007

Hancock County residents wanting to stop the proposed Indiana Commerce Connector have formed Hancock Coalition for Rural Preservation, according to The Daily Reporter of Greenfield. In February, a similar organization started in adjoining Shelby County after backers in the county southeast of Indianapolis formed their own group. After clearing the Senate, the House is considering […]

Plan board rejects industrial park near Honda plant

March 9, 2007

A request to rezone 425 acres near the Honda Motor Co. plant near Greensburg was turned down in a 5-4 vote yesterday by the Decatur County Area Plan Board. California-based Panattoni Development LLC asked to change the zoning from agricultural to industrial in order to develop the land for light manufacturing and warehousing. Projects like […]

Gora seeking new ways to build Ball State’s reputation

March 12, 2007

Entering her third year as Ball State University’s president, Jo Ann Gora has earned a reputation in business and political
circles as a shrewd, aggressive ambassador for the 19,500-student university. And by all measures, she’s just gotten started.

XM-Sirius merger is threat to local HD radio: Local broadcasters hustle to launch digital channels

March 12, 2007

The news of a potential merger between New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and Washington, D.C.-based XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. comes at a critical time for local radio station operators. If the merger draws more listeners, that clearly would be bad news for terrestrial radio stations already dealing with the Internet and Ipod, and could imperil their fledgling high-definition initiative. Already, the proposed $11.4 billion merger is getting lots of media attention, and that’s bound to raise satellite radio’s…

Lawmakers look to accelerate fight against IP piracy: Proposal calls for more cooperation, national network

March 12, 2007

U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh need look no further than his home state of Indiana when recounting the scores of companies victimized by intellectual property thieves. The product designs, brand names and copyrighted material stolen by foreign firms to make counterfeit knockoffs likely are costing Hoosier companies millions of dollars annually. Nationally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates the figure to be $250 billion a year. The pervasiveness of the theft-counterfeiting has increased 10,000 percent during the past two decades-has prompted…

Mansur lands $50M midfield airport hotel

March 12, 2007

The Indianapolis Airport Authority has tapped Mansur Real Estate Services Inc. to develop a $50 million-plus Westin hotel
at the new midfield terminal. But the hotel’s final design may be one submitted by a former competitor, White Lodging Corp.
of South Bend.

Crown Hill development showdown looming

March 19, 2007

Debate over a developer’s plan to buy 71 acres of woods and wetlands on Crown Hill Cemetery’s northern edge for a retail-and-residential
project will come to a head this week when the Metropolitan Development Commission votes on the proposal.

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Will costs and priorities merge or crash?

March 19, 2007

In our first column of the session, introducing you to the assorted variables that would influence the policy outcomes of 2007, we cautioned you that the next few months would be focused upon money and priorities. Lawmakers and Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels had a number of pet initiatives they wanted to see enacted and funded. But, after ensuring that programs and entities that had been shortchanged in the past biennium would be compensated and after bumping up education spending a…
