March 6, 2006

Indians explore prospects in Indiana Delegation of 15 execs finds opportunities during tour of Indianapolis, Purdue tech park J.V.V. Satyanarayana spent the last three years launching his Chennai, India-based software firm. But after only 24 hours in Indianapolis, he was ready to expand his operation. Satyanarayana was part of a delegation of 15 Indian executives who visited Indiana last week. His business, SVL Infotech, manages the IT end of medical billing. It has 100 employees and handles claims worth $100…

Aprimo gears up for IPO: Acquisitions, internal growth put software firm in position to consider public leap

March 13, 2006

Fast-growing marketing-software-maker Aprimo Inc. is positioning itself for an initial public offering, likely within the next 18 months. “I think they have big plans in the marketplace,” said Kimberly Collins, senior analyst for Stamford, Conn.-based technology research firm Gartner Inc. “Clearly, Aprimo would like to … file an IPO. I think they want very much to be the next Unica in the marketplace,” referring to a direct rival that went public last August. Founded in 1998, Indianapolis-based Aprimo makes a…

ABDUL-HAKIM SHABAZZ Commentary: It’s the uninformed voters, stupid

May 1, 2006

May 2 is the primary in Indiana. A lot of Hoosiers will come out and cast their ballots for the men and women they want to represent them in the general election. As of late, however, we’ve been hearing a lot about problems with Indiana’s voting system. Marion County has been the poster child for When Good Election Testing Goes Bad. The county has had nothing but problems with Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software Inc. The problems have ranged from…

Land lease holds building hostage: Owners of parcel entangled in court fight

June 19, 2006

A scuffle for ownership of land under downtown’s landmark Illinois Building has spilled into court, possibly bogging down efforts to redevelop the vacant structure. Building owner HDG Mansur leases the land from its owners under a 99-year agreement it inherited when it bought the building. The pact, signed in 1919, stipulates that any improvements on the land revert to land owners when the lease expires in 2018. A Lebanese businessman appears to be working with HDG Mansur to break the…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Amid stock market’s slide, a high-flier gets grounded

June 19, 2006

In late April, Brightpoint Inc. investors had every reason to feel giddy. Shares of the wireless phone wholesaler were up 85 percent for the year, after advancing 113 percent in 2005. Today, those heady days seem like a distant memory. Since reaching a high of $28.50 April 27, Brightpoint’s shares have lost 50 percent of their value, lopping more than $700 million off the company’s market value. “Clearly, wireless is out of favor on Wall Street and has been for…

Once-shuttered startup NoInk trades hands once more: Global Health Exchange buys software firm

August 14, 2006

Call it a cautionary tale for entrepreneurs with a happy ending. After enduring a failed sale to a venture-capital-backed California firm, managers of NoInk LLC in January bought back the assets of their shuttered company and resurrected it. Now, just seven months later, they’ve sold NoInk again-this time to an acquirer who offers a better fit. “So many small companies are desperate for money, but don’t [just] take money at any cost,” said NoInk President David Kerr. “Be aware of…

Franklin manufacturer benefits from high petroleum costs

August 14, 2006

Increased oil and natural gas prices are hammering many manufacturers, but Franklin-based Grimmer Industries Inc. is flying high. Grimmer specializes in making Hurricane brand air compressors and compressor boosters used in oil and natural gas well drilling and aggregate mining.

Jones’ ChaCha IT firm to have human touch

August 14, 2006

For the last eight months, Indiana’s resident high-tech guru has been quietly developing a new IT firm. Few details have been leaked to the public. But in September, a national media blitz will announce the launch of ChaCha Search Inc., Jones’ new human-assisted Internet search engine.

Putting a spin on 911: Law-enforcement agencies embrace reverse system

August 21, 2006

Langsenkamp, CEO of Sigma Micro Corp. in Indianapolis, began conducting research on the patented Reverse 911 Interactive Community Notification System in 1990. The technology, however, didn’t hit the market en masse until a decade later. Today, roughly 350 law enforcement agencies in the United States and Canada, including those in Carmel and Beech Grove, use it to blast warnings to residents. “It was the first system that ever allowed people to dial phone numbers and deliver messages based on the…

Persistence pays for Interactive Intelligence

September 4, 2006

Interactive Intelligence Inc. has been on a wild ride since its initial public offering seven years ago. The communications software maker saw its shares shoot as high as $50 its first few months of trading, only to have them wallow below $5 for years after the tech bubble burst. But now the company is back in favor on Wall Street.

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Better system of sharing bodes well for profession

November 6, 2006

When it was built in the 1930s, the original James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children was a very large construction project. Yet it required only 40 sheets of drawings, and only the stonework at the entry and the ceiling in the lobby were extensively detailed. The rest of the “detail knowledge” was filled in by contractors. Compare what it took to build Riley with the 50,000-plus drawings issued through six construction managers to build the new Indianapolis Midfield Terminal complex….

Former Lt. Gov. Davis seeks support for Model Indiana

November 6, 2006

Former Lt. Gov. Kathy Davis is attempting to build a virtual version of Indiana for policymakers to wander. If successful, the new IT system could help shape Statehouse debate on a host of subjects.

Emmis’ landmark deal with Apple paying big dividends: Locally based radio group now No. 2 iTunes affiliate

November 13, 2006

Emmis Communications Corp. has a new mantra when it comes to emerging technology some say will kill the radio industry: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Emmis entered a relationship with California-based Apple Computer Inc. nine months ago that is paying big dividends. Since launching one of the radio industry’s first iTunes storefronts on its stations’ Internet sites, Emmis officials said they have become the No. 2 iTunes affiliate based on sales. Only Internet behemoth Yahoo Music sells more….

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Web application is right gift for those who fear software

December 11, 2006

Got a businessperson on your list? We’re hard to buy for, so you have my sympathies. Most of us have specific preferences in software, handheld devices, cell phones and other toys we euphemistically call “tools.” Ties aren’t common in business settings anymore, cutting off yet another formerly fruitful buying channel. Few of us have any use for another desktop nameplate. And gift certificates are rather cold. Software is a particularly bad gift choice. Most of us dread getting new software…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Investors need to be real about their stockbrokers

January 8, 2007

Too many investors view their stockbrokers as “professionals” and not the salesmen they usually are. How do brokers find their customers? Most get their clients from cold-calling or inheriting accounts when fellow brokers leave the firm. Some brokers are adept at finding customers at church, the country club or local service organizations. Compare this point of initial contact to other professionals you deal with. Have you ever been cold-called by a doctor offering you a great deal on that annual…

Successful software veteran forms investment firm: Mark Hill’s $5 million underwrites startup BlueLock

January 22, 2007

When local IT entrepreneur Mark Hill sold his banking software company in August 2005, he emphasized the potential upside for the area entrepreneurial community. Now he’s making good on his word. Not content to bask on a beach somewhere, Hill has organized an Indianapolisbased private investment company called Collina Ventures. With $10 million under management-all provided by Hill-Collina already has made its first investment. This month, it risked $5 million in startup cash to organize Indianapolis-based Blue-Lock LLC, a computer-hosting…

Generator-maker finding new ways to get energy

January 29, 2007

I Power Energy Systems, which makes natural-gas-powered electric generators that are the primary power source of corporate
and college campuses, is a novelty in Indiana. After all, coal is still a cheaper source of electricity than is natural gas.
But I Power is developing applications for electric generators that burn biogas from sources ranging from garbage to ground-up
corn.

NOTIONS: If you want to be your best, Easy Street’s a dead end

February 19, 2007

I’ve been driving around Indiana with my pal, the professor. For four consecutive Thursdays, we rendezvoused at dawn, grabbed cups of caffeine and headed to the northeast corner of the state to teach grant-writing. Our students, desperately seeking funds for the not-for-profit organizations they lead, were eager to learn and engaged in our lesson. The conversations en route were equally engrossing. We talked about our families and their health, our kids and their activities. We covered politics, sports and our…

Could big year mean IPO for Aprimo?: Analyst expects software firm to go public in near future, but company execs aren’t ready to discuss possibility

March 5, 2007

Last year was a good one for fast-growing local marketing software-maker Aprimo Inc. And this year could be even better. “It’s not the beginning of the end; it’s the end of the beginning,” said Aprimo investor Mark Koulogeorge, managing general partner of the Chicago-based venture capital firm MK Capital. “This is the second or third inning of a very long ballgame.” In 2006, Aprimo quietly grew from about 220 to 300 employees and moved into a new headquarters just east…

J.D. Byrider disputes sale of three dealerships: Franchisees may balk at increasing cost of business

March 12, 2007

Used-car chain J.D. Byrider spent the last year recovering from the tragic death of its founder. It responded by posting its highest sales ever, $690 million. “It’s been tough emotionally,” said Steven E. Wedding, chief financial officer and president of franchising for the Carmel-based company, incorporated as Byrider Franchising Inc. “But from a business standpoint, we were prepared to carry on.” Even so, the late James F. DeVoe is clearly missed. Without him at the helm, Byrider has become embroiled…
