Speedway’s windfall leads to speculation: Questions arise about possible new hotel, turn-two suite upgrades and acquisition of adjacent land

November 13, 2006

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s announcement this month that it would sell its stake in Chicagoland Speedway for $69 million has racing industry experts wondering if the famed Brickyard is planning an expansion. “There are a number of things [IMS President] Tony George could use that money for,” said Dennis McAlpine, a New York-based financial analyst covering motorsports and entertainment. “That’s not to say he’s hurting for cash, but I believe he has projects on his plate.” IMS and Daytona Beach,…

SPORTS: You can’t fathom ‘the Luke’ until you’ve been inside

November 20, 2006

Growing up, my brothers and I had the usual constructiontype toys: Lincoln Logs, an Erector Set, Tinker Toys and-if memory serves me-this kit from Kenner you could use to assemble the plastic skyscraper of your imagination. Among the things I tried to build, however, were gymnasiums and stadiums, because I always was fascinated with places that brought together large numbers of people. But since I had the attention span of a gnat and the conceptual engineering skills of an eventual…

Doors still closed on Hamilton County bus service: Local officials continue to nail down preferred routes

November 27, 2006

Bus service to Hamilton County won’t begin this year, as some commuters and planners had hoped. But the 10-month reconstruction of Interstate 70 across Indianapolis’ east side, starting in February, could push the accelerator to get service started. “I’d certainly hope so ….The work on I-70 is probably going to make the commuters’ ride a little tougher,” said Gary A. Huff, town manager of Fishers. It was another interstate project, the 2003 Hyperfix of the interstates 65/70 split downtown that…

Starbucks pours it on in Indiana

December 4, 2006

Over the last seven years, Starbucks has inundated virtually every corner of the Hoosier landscape. And the company has no
plans to slow down. Several Indiana towns–from Gas City to Angola, Batesville to Bluffton–will get their first Starbucks
in 2007.

Hamilton County officials splash cold water on RiverPlace: Upstream trouble on White River could result from adding fill, overflow channel

December 11, 2006

A government panel is echoing the concerns of the Hoosier Environmental Council that Centre Properties’ proposed RiverPlace development along White River at 96th Street could worsen the effects of a flood. The Hamilton County Drainage Board doesn’t carry the weight of the U.S. Geological Survey, but its opinion could influence the giant, mixed-use project’s chances of winning a rezoning case. A letter the drainage board sent recently to the Fishers planning commission comes just before the Fishers Town Council considers…

January 1, 2007

The Arch welcomes visitors to St. Louis. San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge ushers in the masses. And soon the Circle Gateway

January 15, 2007

State officials are advancing plans to privatize a state-run hospital for the mentally ill and now are looking for a not-for-profit
to build and manage a new facility in Indianapolis.

Guidelines target design of downtown development: New rules will protect urban character, supporters say

February 19, 2007

Downtown developments soon will come under extra scrutiny, once new design guidelines are approved in the spring. Known as Urban Design Indianapolis, the process of developing the criteria fell on the shoulders of several groups: the Department of Metropolitan Development, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, Ball State University’s architectural school and the Urban Design Oversight Committee. The intent is not to mandate to developers that their buildings meet certain design standards, but rather that the cosmetics coalesce with the existing…

Ratio building go-to reputation: Convention Center expansion latest notch in firm’s belt

March 26, 2007

As the Final Four approaches, it seems fitting to relive in basketball terms how Ratio Architects Inc. came off the bench in dramatic fashion to save a high-profile downtown project after the star had fouled out. The Indianapolis-based architectural firm played that role in 2004 after sketches from the original out-of-town architect designing the downtown headquarters of Simon Property Group Inc. failed to impress corporate executives. Ratio had one week to deliver, and did. But while the firm’s portfolio is…

Condos offering live/work space are hot

April 9, 2007

The age-old concept of living above your workplace is catching on again in Indianapolis, just as the developers of Douglass
Pointe Lofts had hoped. The $2.65 million landmark at 25th and Delaware streets already will soon also be known for a diverse
roster of local businesses.

Carmel to get $30M Renaissance hotel

April 16, 2007

A prestigious, full-service hotel soon will complement Carmel’s booming office market along North Meridian Street. A Cincinnati
developer broke ground this month on a roughly $30 million Renaissance hotel with 263 rooms and 14,000 square feet of meeting
space.

What you crave

April 20, 2007

Never fear, White Castle fans. The downtown location at 16th and Illinois streets, which is closed and surrounded by a fence, apparently will soon serve sliders again in a shiny new White Castle building with nicer landscaping. Changes are coming…

North side retail nuggets

May 3, 2007

A new Yats restaurant has opened in Fishers, at 8352 E. 96th St. The Cajun and Creole favorite is next door to a Blockbuster half a mile east of Interstate 69. The locally owned restaurant also has locations on College…

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE: Speedway place to play hooky in May

May 21, 2007

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE Speedway place to play hooky in May The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is, as the tag line goes, the “greatest spectacle in racing.” But the month leading up to it is no slouch, either. Lighter crowds, lower admission, and a greater opportunity to get close to drivers and cars mean less is more at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the weeks leading up to the last Sunday in May. With a scant week left…

4 beds, 2 baths and a billboard

June 19, 2007

If you’ve driven north on Delaware Street toward 16th, you’ve seen this billboard. But did you notice the Herron-Morton home behind it? The house is for sale, and it’s one of the most interesting listing I’ve seen in a while….

A new vision for Speedway

June 20, 2007

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission has unveiled its vision for the redevelopment of 400 acres bordered by Main Street, Olin Avenue, and 10th and 16th streets. They’re calling it The Speed Zone and want…

Will employees ride IndyGo to jobs in north suburbs?: Low fares could draw those who can’t afford to drive

June 25, 2007

With little effort, IndyGo may well pack buses on a new route starting in September from Fishers to Indianapolis. After all, the hellish commute on interstates 69 and 465 is its own best advertising for taking the bus. But while full loads each morning to big employment center Indianapolis are one thing, how about when the bus heads back to Fishers to pick up another load for the inbound commute? “It’s like a trucking firm. You want to have full…

Walsingham parking hurdle cleared?

June 25, 2007

For about two years, a lack of parking has delayed a condo conversion at the historic Walsingham Apartments (pictured here, courtesy of Indiana Historical Society) at Delaware and 16th streets. But now, an…

NEWS UPDATE: Essentials intact in convention center plan

June 25, 2007

Indianapolis-based Ratio Architects today unveiled final plans for a 420,000-square-foot expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. Among the details: 254,000 square feet of additional exhibit space, 63,000 square feet of meeting rooms, a new banquet kitchen and 100,000 square feet of so-called “pre-function space”-including three-story entry pavilion planned for the intersection of Capitol Avenue and […]

UPDATE: Carmel met targets for annexation, court rules

June 27, 2007

The Indiana Supreme Court today found for the city of Carmel in a case regarding landowners who opposed annexation of their property in southwest Clay Township following a settlement between the city and an organization that calls itself No Ordinance for Annexation (NOAX), which filed a remonstrance and agreed to the settlement in 2005. The […]
