Mayor-elect Greg Ballard said he’s got nothing against spending city money on the arts, but his administration nevertheless will evaluate whether devoting $2.5 million to it each year is the best use of that money. “It’s OK to fund [the arts] as long as people are relatively safe in the city,” Ballard said. When Indianapolis promoters were deciding what to do to lure leisure travelers to the city over summer break, they decided being short and to the point was the way to go. Apparently, teen-agers driving around with 5,000-decibel subwoofers in their trunks are not the only ones who don’t get this: Many of us are slowly going deaf. Ten percent of Americans under 70 suffer from noise-induced hearing loss, according to the National Institutes of Health. It’s bad enough that the average 25-year-old carpenter has “50-yearold ears” thanks to noise on the job, and that noise-induced hearing loss is the most common work-related medical problem. Since arriving at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Tiffany Wedekind has rubbed shoulders with comic book characters, connected schoolteachers to learning activities, and made plans to travel abroad to help gather ancient Egyptian artifacts.
