At the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, I spent quality time at "Lego Castle Adventure," which features impressively
massive Lego sculptures, a dress-up area, some instructional sessions on castle construction and lots of tables and lego pieces
for building.
My intention on my latest visit to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis was to check out the new “Star Wars: the Clone Wars, the Exhibition,” but I found little of interest there to anyone but the hard-core fan. While I appreciate that not everything at the largely hands-on local treasure can be interactive, I was […]

The world’s largest children’s museum is about to get bigger. The project is slated to begin in the next few months and finish […]
Since arriving at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Tiffany Wedekind has rubbed shoulders with comic book characters, connected schoolteachers to learning activities, and made plans to travel abroad to help gather ancient Egyptian artifacts. She is not a seasoned veteran of the museum field, but a 22-year-old intern who will graduate from Marian College in December. What’s more, Wedekind is not alone. She is among at least 22 college students who will share similar experiences there this summer. Exposing interns…
A sign on the basement wall reads “Construction Zone.” Nearby on the router table, window frames are taking shape along with decorative pieces that will adorn the façade of a World War IIera brownstone. Behind a red plywood wall a few floors up, hammers knock and saws shrill as workers erect a 13,500-square-foot homage to three children who changed the world. It’s just another day at the office for the production crew at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. For months,…
The estate of Indianapolis physician Frances T. Brown has given matching gifts of $1.4 million each to the Indianapolis Zoo and Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The Children’s Museum donation will support its upcoming Global Perspectives exhibit. The gift to the zoo will go to the Roy Shea Fund, which finances pressing capital needs. The female […]
The possibilities are intriguing: A tethered hot-air balloon ride. Old-time hearthside dinners prepared with farm-fresh ingredients. A wilderness-skill challenge that includes rock climbing and a virtual canoe ride. Leaders at Conner Prairie are weighing which-if any-of those ideas would be a good fit at the Hamilton County living history museum, which is focusing on its future even as it works to preserve the past. “The board is very committed to the idea that Conner Prairie must remain relevant and exciting…
Nearly a year after its split from longtime trustee Earlham College, Conner Prairie is on the rebound. The Hamilton County living-history museum is poised to close out 2006 with more revenue than expenses-the first time in years it’s been in the black. “We feel very good about it,” said Berkley Duck, board chairman for both the museum and its affiliated foundation. “We’re coming in pretty well against what we estimated.” That’s impressive, considering the 32-member board didn’t have much time…
With a new director in place and a $74 million renovation and expansion complete, the next step for the Indianapolis Museum of Art is courting donors to financially back the enlarged operations. Those who pledge at least $2,500 to the IMA are invited to accompany, at their own expense, IMA Director Maxwell Anderson and his wife on a cruise in the fall of 2007 to Spain, France and Italy. The excursion coincides with the opening next year of the museum’s…
“Why are taxpayers in California and Texas and Massachusetts paying for a museum in Indianapolis?” David Boaz, executive vice president of the Washington-based Cato Institute, wrote on the think tank’s Web site in May as the bill was coalescing. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis landed the grant under the $286 billion transportation bill signed by President Bush this month. The grant was included in the bill courtesy of Rep. Julia Carson, D-Indianapolis. “Congress constantly uses the Department of Transportation’s budget…
The world’s largest museum meeting convenes in Indianapolis next month, and organizers say the gathering could do more than showcase the city’s ever-growing cultural cache. Hosting an estimated 5,000 museum professionals and patrons also will give cultural tourism efforts a boost and dump more than $4 million into the local economy. The stakes are so high that more than 500 volunteers have been rallied to keep activities running smoothly day and night during the May 1-5 event. Evening events are…
