June 4, 2007

Welbourne Cos., which sold the land to Clarian, still controls about 260 acres of farmland surrounding the intersection. The company plans to build a mixed-use development on the property. Initial phases call for 46,000 square feet of retail space, 42,000…

June 25, 2007

It seems that, in the phone world, everybody loves small businesses these days. AT&T, central Indiana’s primary landline provider, is highlighting small-business offerings in its recently re-branded Cingular stores throughout the region. Cable company Comcast, meanwhile, is rolling out its small-business phone options over local lines and Bright House Networks plans to get in the game within a year. Then there are the scrappy, independent providers such as locally based Indiana Telephone Co. Inc., which have expanded their offerings to…

Biz magazine seeks boost from Recorder: Newspaper’s backing should help minority business publication grow

July 2, 2007

Carolene Mays exited the production area of The Indianapolis Recorder after applying her own elbow grease to ensure a new deadline is met and reflected on the increasingly hectic pace engulfing the newspaper. The publisher of one of the nation’s oldest and most prominent black newspapers is used to carrying a heavy load, considering she moonlights part time as a Democratic member of the state House of Representatives. Yet, she is in uncharted waters as the new owner of Indiana…

July 16, 2007

Regenstrief Institute continues to fine-tune a medical-records system that many think could someday become a national model The Regenstrief Institute is a racing team. Only instead of drivers and grease monkeys, the Indianapolis-based medical research group has doctors and computer geeks. And instead of a race car, Regenstrief runs a massive computer database with 35 years of medical records from Indianapolis-area patients. But Regenstrief’s mission is still all about speed. DogDayz Playhouse & Retreat LLC: It’s a dog’s life Canine day camp offers hotel-like comfort

August 20, 2007

When Gabi comes to work, she enters a room with food and toys before walking down a winding hallway to greet her guests. The friendly welcome she receives could be due to her soft, black hair or her mellow charisma, but her happy tail wag is probably a factor, too. Gabi is “head dog” at Noblesville-based DogDayz Playhouse and Retreat. Her human companion, Brian Cottrell, launched DogDayz in 2003 to offer other pet lovers the kind of services he wanted…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Upon further review … new reasons for old buildings

September 3, 2007

Buildings, just like people, have lives. They’re born, they do their jobs, they take on new roles and, after about 75 years, most of them reach the end. Sadly, some beautiful ones die too soon, while a few ugly ones live too long. How should we decide when to save a building or when to tear it down? And have the reasons changed? The terms of renovation are well-known (adaptive re-use, mixed-use development and historic preservation). When our actions meet…

EYE ON THE PIE: Should we consolidate libraries?

September 3, 2007

At last, we have a commission working to see if we can improve government in Indiana through reorganization. Former Gov. Joe Kernan and Supreme Court Justice Randy Shepard are leading the effort. Some of us are concerned that the commission has been established to find ways not to improve government services, but to cut local property taxes. The two goals might not work in the same direction. Public libraries are often cited as ripe for consolidation. There are 238 of…
