Minorities, women turn to franchises: Proven business systems offer more opportunities

December 3, 2007

Betsy Knoke’s northeast-side business is the latest addition for Colorado-based 10 til 2, a franchised staffing service that places college-educated individuals in part-time employment. On a grander scale, the landscape-architect-turned-business-owner is among the scores of women and minorities who are finding business opportunities through franchises. A report issued in October by the IFA Educational Foundation found minorities own 20 percent of the nation’s franchises and women 25 percent. The affiliate of the International Franchise Association in Washington, D.C., used U.S….

Should Formula One come back?

November 30, 2007

When Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Formula One parted ways this summer, more than one person in Indianapolis
muttered, â??Good riddance.â??

F1â??s leader, Bernie Ecclestone, was viewed as arrogant, pushy and greedy. Just the same, the city likes the
prestige of hosting…

Conseco Inc. will transfer 120 of its 2,300 Carmel employees to a Minnesota company, under a plan the insurer announced today. The employees, who make up nearly two-thirds of Conseco’s long-term care team, still will work from Conseco’s offices on its Carmel campus. Along with the employees, Conseco will shift administration of 170,000 of its […]

Niche firms thrive despite anonymity: Some small businesses don’t need storefronts to keep customers coming

November 26, 2007

Whimsical Whisk isn’t your neighborhood bakery. Pastry chef Clare Welage never wanted it to be. She started the patisserie in 2004 with plans to differentiate herself from the competition by making desserts from scratch using all-natural ingredients, designing items specifically for the customer and-just as important-going without a storefront. “I’ve always felt that if you open up a storefront and you have a specialty product, something somewhere gets compromised,” Welage said. “Ultimately, it’s the quality of the product or it’s…

November 21, 2007

WellPoint Inc.’s subsidiary in Connecticut will lose its contract to manage part of a $700 million insurance program for that state’s poor children and their parents after the Indianapolis health insurer repeatedly refused to disclose information about its practices, the Hartford Courant reports. A&E: A Mass Ave gallery showcases poster artist

November 19, 2007

One of New York’s premiere poster designers is featured in a solo show at the Dean Johnson Gallery, while one of the most popular stand-up comics in the country stops at Conseco Fieldhouse. Last week I wanted to tell you about the Paula Scher show at Dean Johnson Gallery. Alas, space was short and there wouldn’t have been room to show you any of the work. Where’s the fun in that? Now, with more space, we can show you some…

Commentary: Let’s welcome Hilbert back

November 19, 2007

You gotta love Steve Hilbert. He conceived of an idea and had the strength and focus to achieve an extraordinary result that he sustained over a number of years. … He will undoubtedly return to the grand game of entrepreneurship. If given the opportunity, I would be inclined to invest in his next venture. -July 10, 2000 I penned the above prediction in this column on the anointment of Gary Wendt as CEO and savior of Conseco Inc. After Stephen…

SPORTS: The Irish fired-and hired-themselves into a stew

November 19, 2007

If you are among those who believe-and I am among them-that the University of Notre Dame treated Tyrone Willingham unjustly three years ago when it fired him as its football coach just three seasons into his tenure, then you probably share my sense that what goes around has come around in South Bend. If you also are among those who believe-and, again, I am among them-that one of the reasons Charlie Weis is a chunky fellow is because he’s so…

Lilly wins one, loses one with civil rights groups

November 15, 2007

Two weeks ago, the NAACP backed existing and former black employees of Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. in a lawsuit that claims they were treated unfairly. Today, the National Urban League bestowed its Corporate Leadership Award on the pharmaceutical maker for working with the Urban League-also a civil rights group-to sponsor a program that encourages […]

Ballard’s sketchy agenda fuels unease

November 12, 2007

The afternoon after Greg Ballard’s shocking victory at the polls, the mood was sober at Marion County Republican headquarters.
Jubilation had given way to reality. Although mayor-elect Ballard described himself “as tired as a guy could get,” he has
no time for a break. And what the former U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel will do is largely a mystery.

Wish Fund snagged in subprime crisis

November 9, 2007

Indianapolis-based Indiana Children’s Wish Fund has been caught in the national subprime mortgage lending crisis. The small not-for-profit, which grants wishes to terminally ill children, filed an arbitration claim after an investment it had in an intermediate-bond fund lost about $50,000 between late June and late September on an initial investment of $222,812. The bond […]

Ballard is ‘blank slate’ to business leaders

November 7, 2007

Leaders of Indianapolis-area business organizations have a collective question mark in their minds when it comes to the look, feel and business-related priorities of Mayor-elect Greg Ballard. The Republican, who upset Mayor Bart Peterson in yesterday’s election, has promised to fight crime, avoid tax increases and consolidate local government. But it’s unclear what he’ll do […]

SURF THIS: Our changing expectation of experts

November 5, 2007

It seems like everyone is an expert at something. We have automobile experts, stock market experts, antique experts… my company even has a client who’s a sheep and goat expert. In an I n t e r n e t – c e n t r i c world, though, these experts can find themselves in a tough place. Online, information is clamoring to be free (or pretty cheap) and readily available. It’s no longer enough to declare yourself an…

Fast-growing WDG built on years of industry experience: Veteran of Kite, Lauth branches out on his own

November 5, 2007

For Mike Wyman, a devastating fire that gutted the family home during his teen-age years laid the foundation for a rewarding career in construction. The 41-year-old Wyman climbed from carpenter to become a leader of projects at two of the city’s largest commercial developers before launching his own company in 2005. WDG Construction & Development Services Inc. on East Washington Street downtown has since grown into a firm that expects to top $30 million in revenue next year-double this year’s…
