Hotel glut developing downtown: Lodging projects could lift room totals by 40 percent

August 6, 2007

The 10 hotels either under construction or in the planning stages downtown would increase the amount of rooms in the city’s center more than 40 percent-a far greater number than the market likely could absorb, experts fear. The projects are largely in response to Lucas Oil Stadium, slated to be completed by August 2008 and an expansion of the Indiana Convention Center that will nearly double its size by 2010. If all 10 hotel projects come to fruition, almost 2,300…

UPDATE: Sagamore to keep name under Cigna

August 1, 2007

Carmel-based Sagamore Health Network will keep its name even thought it has been acquired by Cigna Corp. The Philadelphia-based health insurer said its acquisition of Sagamore, Indiana’s third-largest managed care organization, will make it much more competitive in the state. In Indiana, Anthem Insurance Co. dominates the health insurance market. “It also adds significantly to […]

Personal training sessions keep gym clients coming

July 30, 2007

In a world where gyms and fitness centers beckon with billboards, water parks and membership specials, Body-N-Motion has found a lower-key, back-to-basics niche. Tucked in an office/flex park next to the headquarters of Mays Chemical Corp. on the northeast side, Mike “Mr. Motion” White’s 5-year-old gym specializes in personal training. All its clients have White or one of his 10 employees putting them through the paces of a customized workout that, White notes with pride, is rarely the same routine…

EYE ON THE PIE: Property tax problem here to stay

July 30, 2007

“I haven’t sung yet,” Frances the Fat Lady said. We were at the Bulging Buffet, which is open 24/7. Frances, one of the state’s biggest experts on public finance, had stacked her plate with bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes and a variety of sweet rolls. “This property tax debate is not over yet,” she said as we took a table. “Despite the fact that only a few counties are really up in arms, there may be enough momentum for something realistic…

One motorcycle race gained, thousands of seats lost: Speedway officials think revenue from MotoGP race will make up for Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 losses

July 30, 2007

The changes to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course to accommodate motorcycle racing means the track’s operators will forfeit around $500,000 annually in ticket revenue for the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400. Due to modifications just south of pit road and directly north of the oval’s first turn, several thousand seats on the inside of the first turn will be removed after this year’s Brickyard 400. Work to prepare the track for next year’s MotoGP motorcycle race-which includes laying 13,300…

Pampering is part of Columbia Club’s turnaround plan

July 30, 2007

The son and grandson of hotel managers, Maarten van Wijk became general manager of the historic-but-ailing 2,000-member Columbia
Club in May. His first priority is to polish the venerable private club’s tarnished quality standards to a lustrous sheen.

INVESTING: Don’t give up on stocks, despite talk of bear market

July 30, 2007

The S&P 500 on June 1 set a rally high of 1,540. Now, it sits at 1,507. That’s the longest stretch of no forward progress since last summer. So, does that mean anything? There is no shortage of professionals telling us the next bear market is upon us. And with more than a few industries not participating for a while, it might seem the bears have a valid point. Before you pull out the lifeboats, though, there are a few…

UPDATE: WellPoint stock stumbles on customer losses

July 25, 2007

Investors whacked WellPoint Inc. stock this morning after the Indianapolis-based health insurer tamped down expectations for customer growth. WellPoint said in its second-quarter earnings report that it lost 108,000 customers in the three months ended June 30 and now expects to add 400,000 fewer customers than it predicted in April. Its shares dropped more than […]

WellPoint Inc. reported today that second-quarter profit rose 11 percent, to $835.2 million, meeting analysts’ expectations of $1.35 per share. The Indianapolis-based health insurance giant also boosted its full-year profit forecast to $5.55 per share. WellPoint pushed revenue past $15 billion for the three months ended June 30, slightly below analysts’ expectations, according to a survey by Thomson […]

July 23, 2007

Five leaders of Indiana’s life sciences industry offered their perspectives at the Indiana Convention Center June 26 as part of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Power Breakfast Series. The panelists: Mike Arpey, managing director of global investment bank Credit Suisse’s Asset Management Division and manager of the $73 million Indiana Future Fund for BioCrossroads, the state’s life sciences economicdevelopment initiative. Ron Ellis, co-founder, president and CEO of Lafayettebased Endocyte Inc., a biotechnology company focused on the treatment of cancer through receptor-targeted…

SPORTS: A race with half the wheels could be twice as fun

July 23, 2007

On July 16, I followed a caravan of about 200 motorcyclists from downtown to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As I climbed out of my car in the IMS parking lot, I heard AC-DC’s “Hell’s Bells” blasting through the loudspeakers. Just another reminder it’s not your father’s Speedway anymore. More to the point, it’s not Tony George’s grandfather’s Speedway anymore. Think about it. No sooner than George and his IMS team bid adieu to Formula One, they said hello to MotoGP,…

Some fear exit opens door for patronage:

July 23, 2007

One improvement BAA made in Indianapolis never got much attention: It tried to weed out patronage jobs. Former airport board member Gordon St. Angelo thought it was one of the most significant benefits of taking airport management out of municipal hands. “I think a major improvement was the streamlining of what had been a semi-patronage type of program,” St. Angelo said, referring to BAA’s eliminating some nonproductive employees and practices. Municipal agencies such as airports’ becoming dumping grounds for politicians’…

Benicorp halts new sales to fix system woes: Complaints, losses mount at local health insurer

July 23, 2007

Locally based Benicorp Insurance Co. stunned health benefits professionals this month by distributing a simple memo. The small provider of group health insurance and benefits administration services announced a moratorium on new business until the company resolved problems with a new claims-processing system. “It’s highly unusual,” said Sheri Alexander, manager of employee benefits at Gregory & Appel, an Indianapolis insurance brokerage. More than 180 complaints have been filed against Benicorp since Jan. 1, according to records at the Indiana Department…

Scientific work experience gives attorneys a boost: Lab knowledge helpful in intellectual property work

July 23, 2007

At first thought, people might assume most attorneys have undergraduate degrees in political science or criminal justice. And while many do, those with backgrounds in engineering, chemistry, physics, and other sciences are being drawn more and more to law because of the growth of interest from businesses in intellectual property. Some IP attorneys decided to take the leap from working in the science world to the legal one, and those who did it say their time working in a lab…

Synagogue project a sign of times: Northward migration of Jews brings temple to county

July 16, 2007

Some folks consider Congregation Shaarey Tefilla’s move to Carmel historic. After all, its new synagogue at 116th Street and Towne Road will be Hamilton County’s first. To others, it’s simply the latest development in the local Jewish community’s century of northward migration. For Rabbi Arnold Bienstock and his members, it’s a homecoming. “There’s a lot of support here,” he said. “People need that if they’ve just moved to an area.” Carmel welcomed Bienstock with open arms 15 years ago, when…

A&E: Gospel, Garland and more

July 16, 2007

“Smoke on the Mountain” belongs-along with “Nunsense,” “Forever Plaid,” and a handful of others-to an interesting phenomenon in contemporary theater: Musicals that don’t have Broadway pedigrees or familiar composers, yet celebrate long, popular runs with group sales and word-of-mouth buoying their box office. Theater artists despise these shows because of their perceived pandering and artlessness. Theater managing directors love them because they bring in the cash. As with many of these populist shows, “Smoke” (currently running at Beef & Boards…

INVESTING: How Middle East turmoil might affect financial markets

July 16, 2007

Al Qaeda is threatening Iran-saying that if the country does not stop supporting Shiites in Iraq within two months, it will suffer terrorist attacks. In addition, Al Qaeda has called for a jihad against Shiite Muslims across the world. With the blessing of the U.S. government, the Shiites are in charge of Iraq now. Iraqi Shiites are receiving arms and support from Iran, a nation the United States has long called evil. We dislike Iran and are at war with…

Conseco might shift up to 150 local jobs to Minnesota firm

July 12, 2007

Up to 150 of Conseco Inc.’s 2,300 Carmel employees could see their jobs transferred to a Minnesota company under a plan being considered by company executives. Transferred employees would continue to work either out of Conseco’s offices or nearby. Conseco announced Thursday afternoon that it might shift a call center and some claims for its […]

UPDATE: Experts say loss of race hurts both F1, Speedway

July 12, 2007

Motorsports experts are divided over who is the biggest loser after the announcement that Formula One will not return in 2008 to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “The Speedway loses one of the world’s marquee global motorsports events and F1 loses out on one of the world’s largest markets for its teams and corporate partners,” said Tim […]
