Startup hopes to find niche with golf travel packages: Former players emphasize ability to customize trips

April 4, 2005

Two men with a gift for golf hope their success at the game will give them an edge as they tee off on a new business venture. Brian Pearce, 26, and Nate Stout, 23, have launched ReadyGolf Getaways, an upstart venture that puts together customized travel packages to courses throughout the country. Pearce and Stout plan to capture a market they think is underserved. While duffers can search the Internet with ease to locate myriad travel packages to golfing destinations…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Great Lakes board battled for sweet price from suitor Bulriss not talking Legal costs singe ITT

April 18, 2005

Great Lakes Chemical Corp. shareholders have had a lot to feel disappointed about in recent years. But there’s no way they can feel let down over the board’s handling of the company’s $1.5 billion sale to Connecticut-based Crompton Corp. A new regulatory filing shows directors of Indianapolis-based Great Lakes went to extraordinary lengths to extract every penny possible from Crompton before sealing the sale March 8. A blow-by-blow account contained in the filing shows the Great Lakes board first began…

A ‘little’ oil boom: More drilling expected in state as prices stay near record

June 6, 2005

“There is increased drilling. There’s a lot of broke-ass oil producers down here that are experiencing a little boom,” said Andrews, president of Vincennes-based Andrews Oil Properties. Oil producers like Andrews, “still driving the same Cadillac I had 15 years ago,” know bet- ter than to entertain fantasies of striking it rich, however. Indiana oil production has been on the wane since a 12.6-million-barrel peak in 1956. Last year, only 1.75 million barrels were extracted from Indiana’s sedimentary rock, according…

Builders pine for acreage: Earlham expects big bucks from land freed by deal

July 11, 2005

Like vultures circling a lone man in the desert, local developers and home builders are jockeying to swoop in and take 413 acres of prime Carmel land when owner Earlham College gives it up following its settlement with Conner Prairie. But Earlham, recognizing the prominence of the last large undeveloped tract in eastern Carmel, isn’t going gently. Interested parties-more than two dozen, at last count-will be required to undergo a formal proposal process before one can feast on the farmland….

Prime property can mend fences: Earlham land sale on right course

July 18, 2005

The process Earlham College has set up to sell 413 acres of prime Hamilton County acreage it expects to receive in its settlement with the Conner Prairie living-history museum is a silver lining to this otherwise stormy saga. In the more than two years since Earlham touched off the Conner Prairie drama by firing the museum’s board, we’ve had nothing good to say in this space about Earlham’s handling of the situation, but the land sale is shaping up as…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Noble Roman’s pays up to sever ties with vulture

September 12, 2005

The pizza-andsub business is tough enough without also having to worry about your largest creditor stabbing you in the back. I n d i a n a p o l i s – based franchiser Noble Roman’s Inc. has rid itself of that looming threat by paying $8.3 million to buy out nearly all the interests of a vulture investment firm that may have been scheming to control the company. The deal settles a lawsuit Noble Roman’s filed in March…

Firm retools after CEO exit: Norwood gives up on sale, to close 2 plants

January 23, 2006

In recent months, Norwood Promotional Products has settled a lawsuit with its distributors, lost its CEO, put itself up for sale, and then taken itself off the block. Last week, the 2,000-employee company announced plant closings in Iowa and Pennsylvania. The swirl of activity is no cause for concern, according to Norwood officials, who say the No. 2 player in the promotional products industry is doing fine and will stay in Indianapolis. The privately held company-known for making customized products…

You can take it to the bank: Financial experts say state’s economy is rising, merger mania isn’t over and regulatory laws could take a toll

March 13, 2006

On Feb. 24, IBJ Publisher Chris Katterjohn, Managing Editor Greg Andrews and banking reporter Matt Kish sat down with four leaders from Indianapolis’ banking and finance sector: Judith Ripley, director of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions; Kit Stolen, CEO of Union Federal Bank of Indianapolis; Steve Beck, president and CEO of the Indiana Venture Center; and Keith Slifer, senior vice president of LaSalle Bank. Among the topics of conversation: How’s the state’s economy doing? Are more bank mergers on…

IMG faces licensing woes in Sunshine State: Florida regulator denies application over policy sales; Indianapolis firm blames paperwork snafu

April 3, 2006

Indianapolis-based International Medical Group Inc. has incurred the wrath of Florida regulators who accuse it of trying to sell policies in their state without a license. However, an IMG representative says the allegations stem from paperwork problems and the lobbying of a disgruntled excustomer turned “cyber stalker.” Founded in 1990 with four employees, IMG now employs 220 in offices in Indianapolis and Great Britain. The company administers insurance policies for U.S. citizens living or traveling overseas. It also provides coverage…

Clarian chooses small firm for big advertising account: The Heavyweights gets nod over larger agencies

April 10, 2006

One of central Indiana’s largest advertising accounts has been awarded to a relatively small but growing agency. Clarian Health Partners this month signed what industry sources are calling a multiyear, multimillion-dollar deal with The Heavyweights, a firm headquartered in The Stutz Building downtown and best known for its creative work for clients such as Procter & Gamble and Roche Diagnostics. Officials for Clarian and The Heavyweights would not divulge the deal’s terms. The Heavyweights will provide creative direction and strategy…

NFL pulls plug on local TV crews: Team owners vote to oust videographers from games

April 17, 2006

Indianapolis TV stations say a new National Football League policy that bans them from the sidelines during games is a violation of their First Amendment rights and threatens a major source of income. A league-wide rule that was passed 32-0 by team owners March 28 allows only the licensed broadcast rights-holder to shoot sideline footage during games. The National Association of Broadcasters, Radio-Television News Directors Association and Society of Professional Journalists have petitioned to have the rule overturned. Though owners…

St. Vincent pediatric claims rile Riley

September 11, 2006

Riley Hospital for Children officials are upset over how St. Vincent Children’s Hospital is promoting a care expansion it recently launched with a renowned Cincinnati medical center.

BEHIND THE NEWS GREG ANDREWS [email protected]: With Finish Line stumbling, analysts weigh sale, LBO

September 11, 2006

Finish Line Inc.’s fortunes have dimmed so dramatically in recent months that analysts are raising a range of ideas that once seemed farfetched to boost the slumping stock. Among them: taking the company private through a leveraged buyout, or selling it to a larger retailer. The athletic-shoe industry is abuzz that an LBO for Finish Line’s struggling rival, New York-based Foot Locker Inc., is already afoot. That company last month hired a financial adviser, just weeks after Women’s Wear Daily…

SPORTS: Butler’s Bulldogs rule-and so does Marvin Harrison

December 4, 2006

Talk about the straw that stirs the drink. That youngster gives maximum effort every second. And while it’s early, I’d stack Graves and his running mate, Michael Green, against any backcourt tandem in the country. Though they couldn’t come out and say it, the NCAA folks who now run the Preseason NIT had to be inwardly thrilled to watch Butler and Gonzaga University reach the championship game on the Madison Square Garden stage. Their rosters are filled with players who…

Ex-Norwood execs say company cheated them out of millions

February 19, 2007

Indianapolis-based Norwood Promotional Products is facing legal challenges from a half-dozen former executives who say board
members and investors conspired to fire them, withhold severance pay and cheat them out of as much as $3.6 million in company
stock.

BEHIND THE NEWS: WellPoint succession breeds unease on Wall Street

March 12, 2007

This isn’t the Well-Point Inc. way. The last two times the Indianapolisbased health insurer appointed a CEO-when Ben Lytle took the job in 1989 and Larry Glasscock succeeded him in 1999-there was no drama. The board had publicly, and painstakingly, groomed the new leader. WellPoint did nothing remotely similar this time around. As CIBC World Markets analyst Carl McDonald pointedly observed in a research note, “There’s clearly a gap in succession planning when a company of Well-Point’s size has to…

Taliera switches strategy for buying underperforming brands of booze

April 9, 2007

Taliera Corp. plan to raise $60 million through an initial public offering was withdrawn March 27, but Taliera isn’t going
away. It’s simply trying a different approach. CEO J. Smoke Wallin said he and his team of eight beverage industry veterans
still believe their business plan is right.

Sallie Mae chief abruptly resigns

May 23, 2007

Sallie Mae parent SLM Corp. said late yesterday that CEO Thomas J. “Tim” Fitzpatrick had resigned and would be replaced by Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer C.E. Andrews. News outlets including The Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported that directors of the Reston, Va., student loan giant felt a fresh start was needed […]
