Seeking to sway politicians: Lobbyists savor the challenge of playing the game, which requires chess-like strategizing

January 10, 2005

When Maureen Ferguson was a lobbyist for the Indiana Petroleum Council, she went skiing for the first time, in Colorado. As her ski instructor was taking her up the mountain, he asked her what she did for a living. When she told him, he “went off” on how the oil industry was corrupt and running the government, and she recalled that she found herself fearing for her life. Now when someone asks Ferguson what she does, sometimes she tells them,…

Parking protest: Spurned operator questions airport contracting methods

January 17, 2005

The nation’s largest parking operator is complaining that Indianapolis International Airport canceled its joint-venture contract and handed the business to the local half of the venture without seeking competing proposals. Nashville, Tenn.-based Central Parking Corp. said that, given the chance, it would have offered the airport more to manage the Premier Business Class parking lot than its now-former partner, Global Parking System of Carmel, did. A counteroffer from Central came after the Indianapolis Airport A u t h o r…

JOHN KETZENBERGER Commentary: A line on city’s stadium plan

January 31, 2005

Don’t bet on gambling revenue as the source of money that nearly doubles the size of the Indiana Convention Center and builds a new stadium just across the railroad tracks. The smart money rides on the notion Sen. Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville, will take up Mayor Bart Peterson’s invitation to find another source of revenue to back the bonds for the $900 million project. The chairman of the newly created Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee isn’t being coy by revealing…

CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary: Hail to the chief, a class act

March 21, 2005

CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary Hail to the chief, a class act There’s not much call in my line of work to interact with the chief of police. And, in the case of outgoing Indianapolis Police Chief Jerry Barker, it’s been my loss. I came face to face with Jerry 18 months ago because of an extracurricular activity I was involved in. Nothing illegal, mind you. He and I were mates among 40 people in the inaugural class of the Diversity Leadership…

IUPUI discovers Office for Women still needs to exist: Program uses workshops, discussions and awards to keep the issues affecting women in the forefront

April 11, 2005

While many universities have programs dedicated to women’s equality, the IUPUI Office for Women is not taken for granted by the administration there. “It is important as part of the university’s diversity department,” said Kathy Grove, director of the IUPUI Office for Women. “It helps women to fulfill their potential and ensure that we have an environment free of harassment based on gender.” Established in October 1996 under the leadership of Dr. Kathleen Warfel, who was a professor of pathology…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Frick, master of megadeals, ready to dial back intensity

June 20, 2005

Attorney David Frick says Anthem Inc.’s $20.8 billion purchase of Well-Point Health Networks was the toughest deal he ever negotiated-and that’s saying something. This is the same guy who helped broker the 1983 deal selling the Indiana Pacers to Mel and Herb Simon, eliminating the risk the franchise would go elsewhere. The same guy who served as the city’s chief negotiator in the deal that brought the Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis in 1984. Anthem-WellPoint was even tougher, Frick says, in…

Overcoming negativity can boost bottom line: Realistic optimism is a skill worth learning

September 12, 2005

Negativity is an increasing problem in the workplace, costing U.S. companies about $3 billion a year in lost productivity, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Whether it’s due to downsizing, budget cuts, lack of participation in decision-making, or co-workers who are simply pessimistic, negativism hurts everybody. Suzanne Metzger knows this firsthand. She said strong faith helped her weather a life-threatening setback-breast cancer. A major obstacle in her life was dealing with difficult people instead of holding her anger…

‘Lighting’ the way for women in the trades: Pair overcomes obstacles with tenacity, hard work and attention to the smallest detail

February 13, 2006

If women have a tough time breaking into the construction trades, then Melanie Goldman, president of Goldman Electrical Contracting Inc., and Carla Partin, a union journeyman electrician, have managed to beat the odds. Both women have encountered obstacles in this mostly male field, but both were determined to succeed. Goldman, 32, runs the electrical company she owns with her husband, Bill. She has heard men say many times “Just have your husband call me,” but she doesn’t let that pass….

ABDUL-HAKIM SHABAZZ Commentary: It’s the uninformed voters, stupid

May 1, 2006

May 2 is the primary in Indiana. A lot of Hoosiers will come out and cast their ballots for the men and women they want to represent them in the general election. As of late, however, we’ve been hearing a lot about problems with Indiana’s voting system. Marion County has been the poster child for When Good Election Testing Goes Bad. The county has had nothing but problems with Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software Inc. The problems have ranged from…

SMALL BUSINESS PROFILE: JP PARKER CO.: Business blooming for specialty florist Flower farm, retail shop feed green thumb’s growth

July 31, 2006

SMALL BUSINESS PROFILE JP PARKER CO. Business blooming for specialty florist Flower farm, retail shop feed green thumb’s growth More than 300,000 sunflowers are in various stages of growth on Needham, Ind., farmland, where a third generation carries on the family tradition with a modern twist. These tall summer annuals follow a spring where 1,000 blooming peony plants yielded at least 11,000 stems for a Chicago broker. Smaller plots of delphiniums, larkspur, zinnias, coneflowers, mints, herbs and other greenery also…

VIEWPOINT: Diversity has unexpected benefits

November 27, 2006

As a leader of your company, are you taking advantage of the benefits of diversity? Is your organization’s culture resistant to change? Are you considering the business advantages of diversity? Can a firm without a variety of internal perspectives and ex perience meet 21st-century challenges? In our industry, professionals come in all colors, shapes and sizes and from just about every culture in the world. We see a host of opportunities as a result of the incredible diversity in qualified…

SPORTS: Rome won’t burn if we remember to stick together

March 12, 2007

Recently, I attended a Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Seminar at the Downtown Marriott. Members of the socalled “City Committee”-a group that convened three decades ago to brainstorm and map the future of India n a p o l i s – w e r e addressing younger professionals who well could be involved in determining the direction for our city over the next 30 years. Louis Mahern, who was then a leading state Democratic senator helping to push bipartisan support…

ROSE awards ceremonies honor hospitality workers: Eleven employees commended for top-level service

April 2, 2007

After the passing of the restaurant’s general manager, “Mama” stepped into the grief-filled void, providing leadership while consoling the staff. During a charity silent auction, Camerone auctioned off herself as an inhome chef for an evening. She ended up generating the most proceeds, enough to make a dream come true for a child during the Make-a-Wish Telethon. Pamela Evans, customer service agent, American Airlines Evans is a customer service agent for American Airlines and her territory often can be among…

A&E: Fringe characters meet Fringe Film

August 20, 2007

By the time you read this, Gen-Con-one of our town’s largest conventions-will have packed up its multisided dice, folded its cowled costumes, and drunk its final Mountain Dew (at least for this year). How you feel about this convergence of game players will influence, in part, how you feel about “A Great Disturbance,” a feature film to be screened Aug. 17, 24 and 31 as part of Fringe-Film, the new movie component of the 3-year-old IndyFringe Festival. To be clear,…

SPORTS: These are the most valuable players on our team

October 15, 2007

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning made news recently when Business Week ranked him 13th among the 100 most-powerful people in sports. Not to be outdone, or to let a good idea go unstolen, here’s my list of the 25 most- influential people in Indianapolis sports. Criteria: my opinion. No. 1: Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George. With three races (including next September’s Moto GP motorcycle debut) bringing in more than $700 million annually, IMS is the elephant in the room that…

Need for college watchdog not-for-profit questioned

October 15, 2007

Not everyone is welcoming the launch of an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit, backed by billionaire businessmen, that aims
to curb colleges’ discretion in spending donor contributions.

City ready to launch bid for USA Basketball

October 22, 2007

Indianapolis is poised to launch a bid
to attract USA Basketball’s headquarters from its Colorado Springs home. The not-for-profit national governing body for men’s
and women’s basketball in the United States recently put out a request for proposals for a new headquarters city.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: World War II veterans built economy into juggernaut

November 12, 2007

Veterans Day is upon us again, and the slow passing of the World War II generation sparks thought on their contributions. I will let others dwell on their considerable wartime achievements. I am an economist, not a historian, after all. Our 16 million World War II veterans emerged from conflict in the late summer of 1945 to a muchfractured world. The production of goods-where facilities had survived bombs and artillery-was almost wholly focused on the demands of war. A worldwide…

Does WellPoint’s Braly show trend?

November 19, 2007

Angela Braly, WellPointâ??s CEO, has not only made The Wall Street Journal â??s list of â??50 Women to Watchâ??
but she hit the top spot.

Not so long ago Braly was largely unknown right here in WellPointâ??s headquarters city.

Does Bralyâ??s rise…

Commentary: Reforming elections should be top priority

April 14, 2008

The intensity of the Democratic presidential contest is propelling expectations that Indiana primary voters will influence the selection of the Democratic presidential nominee. The question is, will Indiana conduct a fair election? Elections are the heart of democracy and the instrument for the people to choose leaders and hold them accountable. The validity of the elected depends upon the integrity of the voting process. If elections lack integrity, the entire democratic system is at risk. Since 2000, polls have consistently…
