Cincinnati-based Gilligan Co. has acquired all 16 of the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants in the Indianapolis market.

Financial terms were not released. The eateries had been acquired by Terre Haute-based Womack Restaurants in 2016. Womack released the Indianapolis franchises back to Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and they were refranchised to Gilligan.

With the acquisition, Gilligan now owns 31 Popeyes locations. In addition to the Indianapolis stores, it also has Popeyes in three metro markets in Ohio: Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus.

Gilligan, which was founded in 1993, operates the GOCO brand convenience stores in Cincinnati and Columbus, and it also is a franchisee of Subway, Popeyes and Dunkin Donuts. The company currently has more than 90 convenience-store and quick-serve-restaurant locations.

Founded in New Orleans in 1972, Popeyes was acquired by Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International Inc. for $1.8 billion in 2017. As of Dec. 31, RBI owned or franchised 3,316 Popeyes locations.

RBI, which also owns Burger King and Tim Hortons, is one of the world’s largest quick-service restaurant companies. The company had more than $34 billion in sales and more than 27,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries as of Dec. 31.
