Three of Indiana's largest natural gas utilities are projecting heating bills won't be significantly higher this winter.

Citizens Energy Group, which counts about 266,000 customers in and around Marion County, said that residents' bills will stay about the same as those a year ago, assuming normal temperatures. The typical residential customer in Marion County paid $609 last winter. The projected bill for the typical Marion County customer this year is $615 from November through March, according to the utility.

Elsewhere in the state, NIPSCO says its average residential customer could expect to pay approximately $461 this winter, an 8 percent decrease from $499 last year. It has more than 786,000 natural gas customers across the northern third of Indiana.

Vectren, which has about 570,000 natural gas customers across the state served by its northern division, also predicts bills would be similar to last year, assuming normal weather.

Vectren says abundant U.S. supplies have led to natural gas costs gas costs remaining at 2001 levels. It says gas costs represent about two-thirds of winter bills.
