The Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday reported 4,347 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest daily total since Nov. 9. New cases had exceeded 5,000 in the previous 15 days.

Despite the drop in cases, newly reported deaths due to COVID-19 surged to 129, the second-highest number of new deaths ever contained in the daily report. Hospitalizations also rose for the first time since in more than a week.

The only time the state has reported more new deaths was Dec. 1, when 142 deaths were reported.

The department said Tuesday’s number included deaths that took place from Nov. 8 to Monday, but all of them were newly reported on Monday. More than 90% of the deaths occurred in the past five days.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 3,072 on Sunday to 3,229 on Monday. The high was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

The department said it tested 11,435 new individuals, the 49th straight day that testing in that category has exceeded 10,000. The testing number, however, was the lowest since Nov. 1.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals decreased from 24.8% to 24.5%.

COVID-19 patients occupy 42.3% of the state’s intensive care beds. The state said 23.9% of its ICU beds are still available.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.
