The winner will replace Kate Sweeney Bell, who stepped down in August after five years in the role.
Precinct committee people will choose between Eldridge, Ashley Greene-Hogue, Karla Nowlin and Rosemary Turentine.
Greene-Hogue is a Pike Township precinct committee member and the assistant secretary of Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis. She is also the daughter of Pastor David Greene, president of Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis.
Greene-Hogue was listed as the press contact when three groups urged the county party to choose its first Black chair following Bell’s resignation. The statement also urges the party to choose a leader not currently in a county-elected position. Eldridge is the only candidate in an elected position.
Greene-Hogue said she would establish an advisory committee to include diverse voices in the party.
“This advisory committee would help with the selection of vacant precinct committee people instead of this being the chairperson’s decision only,” Hogue told IBJ in an email.
Nowlin is also a Pike Township precinct committee member. In a statement posted to her Facebook page, she said, “I vow to use my business leadership skills to change the culture and structure of the Democratic Party through empowerment, education, and inspiration.”
Turentine is the owner of Yes I Can Commercial and Janitorial Cleaning Services and the author of a book of Christian-inspired poetry. Turentine also was a substitute teacher at Providence Cristo Rey High School and served as an executive assistant at Indianapolis Public Schools for eight years.
The caucus will take place at 6 p.m. at the Julia Carson Government Center.
