Company not backing down on quarry near Lafayette

A company is pushing ahead with plans for a limestone quarry along the Wabash River near Lafayette despite a new county ordinance meant to block the project.

The Tennessee-based Rogers Group on Tuesday filed a completed land use request for the rural site near the Tippecanoe County community of Americus.

Rogers Group vice president Andy Williams tells the Journal & Courier the company will seek zoning board approval for a quarry on the 524-acre site.

Williams says the company has been working on the project since 2009 and doesn't believe the ordinance approved by county commissioners in July applies to its proposed quarry.

Many nearby residents have opposed the quarry plans, citing worries about dust, truck traffic, blasting and property values.
