The first part of IBJ’s [Jan. 12] editorial makes the common sense case for transparency regarding campaign contributions.

Where I have a problem is suggesting that with high campaign contributions comes risk of undue influence and “quid pro quos.” IBJ is essentially saying that good candidates with integrity can’t be bought for say, $5,000, but they sure can for $100,000.

By limiting contribution dollar amounts, an essential freedom is being denied. The answer is in having a competitive, watch-dog press that will inform the public on the candidates and the contributors.

I suspect the publisher of IBJ would rightly fight any restrictions on his right to print what he wants when he wants at whatever cost he incurs.

Political speech is the most protected speech by the Constitution and it is the most important category of expression.
