The Irvington Vinyl record shop is closing its doors after about four years in business.

Owner Rick Wilkerson, 64, told IBJ he’s planning to move out of town, which is why he’s stepping away from the store at 9 Johnson Ave.

Wilkerson said the store is doing well, and he attempted to sell the business rather than close it. He said he received inquiries from multiple people, but nothing developed from there.

“I had a lot of tire-kickers," he said. "I didn’t, in the end, get an offer from anyone.”

The shop began a 40 percent-off liquidation sale Friday, and will remain open through the end of the month, or possibly longer depending on how long it takes to sell the stock.

Irvington Vinyl opened in 2014 and sells new and used vinyl records, along with a selection of CDs, music DVDs and cassette tapes.

Wilkerson previously owned Irvington Vintage, a shop on Audubon Road that sold a variety of items, including clothing, household goods and records.

As vinyl records became more popular, Wilkerson decided to close the vintage shop and open a store dedicated to records.

Irvington Vinyl shares its retail space with the independent bookstore Bookmamas, owned by Kathleen Angelone. Bookmamas, which sells both new and used books, also announced this week that it would be closing.

Wilkerson said the lease for the space expires at the end of April, which prompted the timing of both stores’ decisions to close now.
