Former President Barack Obama plans to visit Gary to rally for Democratic candidates on Sunday afternoon.

The Indiana Democratic Party announced Wednesday morning that Obama will be at the Genesis Convention Center to encourage people to vote early and recruit volunteers for Election Day.

Obama will be joined by U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, who is in a heated re-election race against Republican Mike Braun, but he also will rally for “Democratic candidates up and down the ticket,” according to the announcement.

Obama’s appearance is the latest in a string of visits to Indiana from well-known politicians, indicating the importance of the U.S. Senate race.

Republican President Donald Trump and Vice President (and former Indiana governor) Mike Pence will be in Southport on Friday night, and Trump will be in Fort Wayne on Monday.

The stops will be Trump’s fourth and fifth visits to the state since the primary election.

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., recently campaigned for Braun in Greenfield.

Former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden held a rally for Donnelly earlier this month in Hammond.
