The Truth in Elkhart yesterday criticized Gov. Mitch Daniels and his challenger in this year’s election, Jill Long Thompson, for inadequate plans to boost economic development in north-central Indiana.

In an editorial yesterday, the newspaper chided Daniels for claiming to have creating the best business environment in the Midwest even as the core recreational vehicle and manufactured housing industries in the Elkhart area continue to take it on the nose through repeated downsizings and closings.

Referring to economic development announcements made in Daniels’ first term, the editorial said local workers laid off from their jobs wouldn’t likely be impressed.

“See if anybody wants to car pool to Greensburg, Tipton or Cambridge City,” it said.

The Truth also hammered Daniels’ Democratic opponent for “vague promises” on job creation.

Categorizing the state into three economic tiers and allocating economic development resources accordingly is inadequate, the newspaper said.
