Vice President, Development
Milhaus
Brad Vogelsmeier leads mixed-use apartment development efforts at Milhaus with a team that’s spread out across 12 U.S. markets and has overseen the development of over $2 billion in apartment projects and more than 10,000 units of construction. His work includes a $125 million mixed-use master plan project in Noblesville that transformed an underused 50 acres of land into a neighborhood set up for inter-generational living. The project will be home to over 1,000 new residents and features market-rate apartments, for-sale town houses, apartments designed specifically for active adults, and 30,000 square feet of retail space. “I love seeing the tangible impact that is made in neighborhoods all across the country with our projects,” he said. Vogelsmeier also serves on the Indiana Economic Development Corp.’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative 2.0 review committee, which has allocated $500 million of state funding to cultivate talent and grow communities statewide.
Getting here: In 2014, Vogelsmeier, then in graduate school at the University of Michigan, “pestered” the principals at Milhaus to let him spend his spring break as an unofficial intern for the company. “From there, they decided to take a chance on me,” he said. They offered him a full-time position after he graduated, and he’s been there ever since. Vogelsmeier helped open the company’s Kansas City office and has worn a number of hats serving the development team during his tenure.
First job: a lawn-mowing business during his childhood
Givebacks: chair, Urban Land Institute; board member, Greater Virginia Avenue Corridor’s Economic Improvement District
Meaningful moment: “Breaking ground on the first project I ever worked on, Gallerie, a $70 million mixed-use apartment, retail and townhome project in Kansas City.”
Lesson learned: Leading doesn’t always mean having the right answer, and asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness.•
