The project to create a landscaped area just north of the coliseum began last week. The landscaped area is designed to slow traffic near the building and provide outdoor space for special events.
The work is projected to cost $2 million. Of that, $1.6 million will come from a federal grant awarded through the Indiana Department of Transportation. The state fair commission is covering the remainder of the expense.
The project is expected to be completed in December, with landscaping to be finished next spring, The Indianapolis Star reported.
Indianapolis-based architecture firm Cripe designed the plaza, and 3D Co. of Muncie is the lead contractor.
