The Indianapolis Star has landed a new sports columnist in the wake of Bob Kravitz’s departure to a local TV station.

The local media company announced Wednesday that Gregg Doyel, national columnist for CBSSports.com, would begin work on Oct. 20.

"Indianapolis might just be my favorite city in America—no, really—and the Star is going to let me be the sports columnist? Pinch me!” Doyel told the Star. "No, kindly don't pinch me. But understand please that this position is a dream come true, and I'm going to give this job and this city the best I've got."

Formerly a national basketball writer for CBSSports.com, Doyel also has covered the Florida Marlins for the Miami Herald and the Atlantic Coast Conference for The Charlotte Observer. He is the author of two books: "Coach K: Building the Duke Dynasty" and "Kentucky Wildcats: Where Have You Gone?"

"Gregg is an accomplished journalist on the national sports scene—a talented storyteller who's unflinching in his opinions and who has a deep passion for his work," Star Executive Editor Jeff Taylor said.

Kravitz resigned as sports columnist in August after 14 years with the Star and, arguably, as its most-recognized personality.

He took a similar position with WTHR-TV Channel 13, writing for its website and providing commentary on professional, college and high school sports on newscasts.

Doyel grew up in Mississippi and attended the University of Florida from 1988-1992, according to his social media accounts. He started working for CBSSports.com in 2003.

Doyel’s hiring at the Star helps solidify its sports staff after considerable turnover. In the space of one month this summer, the sports department lost five of its most senior writers with a combined 123 years of experience at the paper.
