City officials in Anderson have approved a deal under which an auto parts supplier will build a factory that could employ 400 workers in the next few years.

The Anderson City Council voted 7-0 on Wednesday in favor of a 10-year property tax break plan for NTN Driveshaft Inc. worth about $12 million. The company based in Columbus says it plans to spend about $140 million on building and equipping the factory where it will make velocity joints for the automotive industry.

Construction work is expected to begin this winter, the Herald Bulletin reported. Company president Jim Riggs said initial production will start in spring 2017 and workers will be hired and sent to the Columbus plant for training prior to the opening.

NTN is expected to buy 80 acres near the intersection of Layton Road and 73rd Street for the plant from the Anderson Economic Development Commission for just over $1.6 million.

NTN Driveshaft, a division of Japan-based NTN Corp., has about 1,700 workers at factories in Columbus. Company officials expect that workforce to remain stable.

The company began operating in Columbus in 1990. Its parent was founded in Japan in 1918.
