Authorities charge man suspected of critically injuring restaurateur

Authorities have apprehended a man suspected of critically injuring a downtown Indianapolis restaurant owner who confronted him over his unpaid tab.

The city's Violent Crimes Unit and U.S. Marshals Task Force apprehended Maurice Dunlap in downtown Indianapolis on Thursday shortly after he was identified as the assailant who attacked Acapulco Joe's owner Grant Redmond two days earlier.

Police say Dunlap, 40, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery, one count of theft and one count of attempted fraud. He also faces charges in an unrelated case that include robbery with serious bodily injury and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

Redmond's partner, Robert Plank, told The Indianapolis Star the 57-year-old proprietor remained hospitalized in intensive care Thursday. Plank said doctors are hopeful that Redmond eventually makes a full recovery.

Plank said that after Dunlap tried to pay his $40 tab with a stolen credit card Tuesday and left the restaurant after the card was rejected. Redmond followed the customer outside and was punched and knocked out.

Redmond needed surgery for a blood clot on his brain.
