United Van Lines, the Missouri-based moving company, said today that a smaller proportion of its customers left Indiana last year than in any year since 1993.

United counted 3,871 customers leaving Indiana compared to 2,780 moving into the state—meaning 58.2 percent of all moves were outbound.

That’s the best the state has experienced since the 57.6 percent of 1993 and a decline from 65.1 percent in 2004, said United, the nation’s largest moving company.

United spokeswoman Jennifer Bonham said the company doesn’t attempt to determine reasons for trends within individual states.

Americans last year continued the long-established pattern of migration to the Southeast and West.

North and South Carolina were top net destination points, whereas Michigan and North Dakota experienced the greatest net out-migration.
