About 300 workers at Citizens Gas & Coke Utility’s coke-making division have been told that they risk be laid off because the plant might be sold, Citizens announced this morning.

Citizens, which has been trying to sell the plant at 2950 Prospect St. because it no longer fits its business strategy, said it is “concluding that process, and we remain optimistic that ongoing talks to sell the facility will be successful.”

Citizens did not name the potential buyer, but said a sale could occur within 60 days.

Earlier this month, Citizens made early retirement offers to 41 of the workers, but did not say in its release how many have accepted the offer.

The coke plant supplies gas to the Perry K steam generation plant on Kentucky Avenue near Victory Field downtown. During cold weather, the Perry K plant supplies steam to heat 200 downtown buildings; in warm weather, the steam turns water chillers that cool the buildings.
