The Indianapolis FBI field office will lease 110,000 square feet in three buildings to be built just north of Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, the agency and U.S. General Services Administration announced this morning.

B.C. Development Co. of Kansas City, Mo., will join with Indianapolis-based Meyer Najem Corp. to raise the three-building complex on 11.4 acres at an estimated cost of $38 million. The space, located between 86th and 91st streets, and Allisonville Road and Castle Knoll Blvd., will be leased for $54.2 million over 15 years.

Construction is to begin this fall, and the offices will be occupied in late 2008. The building will be designed to be expanded, if necessary.

Since the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the FBI has been moving its offices into stand-alone locations for the safety of its employees and those who work for unrelated entities that had shared multi-tenant buildings with the FBI. The FBI was thought to be a target in the bombing.

The FBI currently operates from 55,000 square feet in the Minton-Capehart Federal Building downtown.

The U.S. General Services Administration sought a developer to build a maximum of 110,000 square feet of office space and then rent it back to the federal government. Congress has approved $4.2 million in annual rental expenses over 15 years.

An advertisement for the project in 2000 asked for any potential location to be a six- to eight-acre site in Marion County, north of Interstate 70 and east of Interstate 65.
