Subscribe NowTipton mayoral candidates say the $530 million transmission plant Chrysler Group and Germany-based Getrag Corporate Group are building near the town should provide job growth without disrupting the rural way of life associated with the community, according to the Kokomo Tribune.
Getrag’s tax abatement request shows it intends to hire 1,088 Chrysler workers, and create 82 of its own jobs. Some of those workers are likely to buy houses in Tipton and otherwise help support the economy.
And the plant’s location-about four miles from Tipton on U.S. 31-is just far enough away that “we’ll still have our small town,” Republican candidate for mayor Angela Grosvenor told the newspaper.
But Dan Delph, a Democratic mayoral candidate, wants to ensure traffic doesn’t snarl. Delph said Tipton should consider building a bypass.
The plant, formally announced June 18, is expected to open in 2009. Tipton is just north of Hamilton County.
