Anderson is one of four mid-sized cities an information technology company is considering as a site for a 500-employee call center, according to the Herald Bulletin.

The Anderson Redevelopment Commission called a special meeting last night to consider an unnamed company’s request that the city spend $850,000 to upgrade an existing building it wants to occupy.

The city’s marketing consultant, Greg Winkler, said the jobs would pay $10 an hour. Most would be in customer service.

Anderson has missed out on several potential call center projects because existing buildings were too expensive to upgrade, Winkler told commission members. Sallie Mae opted for Muncie, WellPoint Inc. picked Indianapolis and IBM chose Daleville-costing Anderson hundreds if not thousands of jobs.

On Sept. 24, the Economic Development Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a tax increment fund bond for the project.
