The Kresge Foundation has committed $900,000 to WFYI, a key contribution that could help the Indianapolis public radio and television broadcaster polish off a $20.2 million campaign to help it complete a transition to digital broadcasting.

If WFYI can raise a final $2.2 million, Kresge will become the last contributor, bringing the total to $20.2 million, WFYI President and CEO Lloyd Wright announced this morning.

“This is a very big deal for us,” Wright said.

Kresge is headquartered in Troy, Mich., and specializes in donations to not-for-profits.
The Kresge money can only be used on digital equipment and facilities.

The WFYI Teleplex moved this year to the former Indiana Energy headquarters at 1630 N. Meridian St. from its long-time location at 1401 and1433 N. Meridian St.

The broadcaster bought the building for $8.5 million and planned to spend $11.6 million renovating the first two floors.
