Subscribe NowPurdue University trustees this morning approved a capital improvement budget that includes spending $17 million more on renovating and expanding Mackey Arena than the $82 million anticipated last year.
The scope of the project is the same; the additional cost was forced by escalating prices for materials and other construction costs, as well as by unanticipated asbestos removal.
The updated arena, which was built in 1967, will include improved sports medicine, rehabilitation and conditioning facilities. The improvements also cover locker rooms, and additional office, meeting and study spaces.
The $1 billion, 10-year budget also calls for improving the Recreational Sports Center and renovating life sciences facilities on the campus.
Other projects in the budget include a new power plant boiler, a learning center and a second phase in the renovation of Windsor Halls.
The budget, which would take affect in July 2009, must be approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
