4 thoughts on “WNBA considering expansion, changes to playoff format

  1. LOL. Knew this was a WaPo article before clicking. Typical to every WNBA article ever written, they grasp at whatever weak positive metric available. “Viewership is up!” Up from what?…. WNBA is a 25 yr old business model that survives on corporate welfare and would have been bankrupt many times over without it. The Fever couldn’t consistently sell out Southport HS gym.
Of course the business checks every box for woke Democrats and anyone opposing the stupidity of expansion is obviously sexist and Racist!

IBJ— pretend you are a business publication and let’s see some hard financial metrics. Then let me know what banks or financial sources I could take that model to and get 25 years of financing.

    1. Did you not read past the first sentence? Because the second sentence answers your question: “The 2021 playoff broadcast numbers have increased 78% from last season and 54% from 2019 as the league continues to command more and more eyes.” No, it’s not overall viewership, but the playoffs are the most important part of any sports league, and increases in viewership during the playoffs from previous years is certainly a success metric.

The insults you lob in your comment only prove that you were biased against the WNBA in the first place, and for some reason associate it with “woke Democrats”, so it’s likely that nothing they would’ve said in this article would’ve changed your (misinformed) opinion.

    2. Chuck, the WNBA’s bank is called the NBA, so it doesn’t need to qualify for traditional financing. This is a wire story that was posted late at night, but we did add some balance to the article by pointing out that the league loses money every year and previously had 16 teams.

  2. The games are poorly attended. Rating on TV are negligible. Oh, and by the way: “The league has yet to turn in an annual profit and loses an average of about $10 million a year.”

Sounds like a perfect time for expansion.
