  1. For a long time this country thrived with one parent at home caring for the children while the other parent (usually the man) worked. Whatever happened to those days? It certainly benefited the children. Which brings up another question, years ago many were warning technology would create massive joblessness in society. Where are those people now?

    1. There’s a ton of research on this but I’ll summarize a couple points.

Cost of living has outpaced wage growth of a single earner so that necessitates 2 worker households.

Technology and automation have led to huge increases in productivity, without a corresponding wage increase or mandatory hours worked reduction.

High paying manufacturing jobs have dwindled and were replaced with low pay service industry jobs.

All of this can be linked to under regulated corporate greed and dissolution of workers union power.

  2. Agree with Charlie. The whole (usually the man) working is not longer the case. A lot of women are the bread winner of the house and don’t expect to stay home with kids. I don’t know how any adult families below the age of 25 can start a strong career given the current economy. Child care, college debt, consumer debt, it’s nearly impossible to get ahead.
